I know that many of these have been answered here before, but I can't seem to find them here or anywhere else.

First off, engine is out of a '92.

1) I know I need to replace the timing guides with the revised metal-backed versions. Which guides do I need to replace? There are about 6 different ones. If I go with an aftermarket one (like Beck-Arnley) are these considered "revised?"

2) Is there a COMPLETE gasket set out there? I'm looking at gaskets on Rock-Auto and it's a complete pain in the butt to tell from the few word description of each what it includes. It would be great if I could buy ALL the gaskets at once.

I've got some pictures of my injectors and harmonic balancer I need to post up to see if I need to scrap them or if they're "fixable".

You can get a kit from nissan... 10101-60U26- GASKET KIT- ENGINE REPAIR, about $400 from Joe.

as far as guides are concerned i bet the "aftemarket" ones are going to be as expensive if not more expensive than OEM ones. Basically the guides that fail are the 2 slack side guides, the tension side guides are already metal backed.

That basically includes every seal on the motor. The ones on ebay dont include near that many.

I bought the Victor-Reinz gasket kit for the VH off ebay for $100 (part number FS 5918). It has all the little oddball gaskets like the 8 intake runner rubber rings, front and rear crankshaft seals, water pump gasket (although I'd use just silicone instead), EGR and idle air gaskets... yadda yadda.

Looking at that $400 nissan kit, it looks like my gasket kit has all the gaskets/seals in that kit. Might be able to save some $$$ if you shop around for it.

Hey does FAST operate sluggish for you? I've tried part numbers in it too they dont seem to be valid?

Just heard back from the guy I got my engine from and he has a ton of old parts (that are new) laying around I need.

Has a complete JIS gasket set, new water pump, knock sensors, coolant sensor, and some other stuff. Awesome find.

Those slack side tensioners are $51 and $62 on Rock-Auto. Anyone remember prices on OEM parts?

It was mis-stated earlier in this thread that you really only need the slack side guides. It's the tension side guides that were updated. The slack side guides are the curved ones. The tensioners act against the slack side guides. Sounds messed up, I know. I dunno about prices, but if you're on a tight budget (as most of us are) you can just replace the tension side guides if the other guides look good and call it a day. The tensioners don't normally fail on the VH. I'd pick up a new oil pump chain though since it's cheap and easy (like my favorite girlfriends).

Thanks for the info Scott. I am on a budget here but I would like to do everything right the first time. I'm actually happy that it's the tension side guides since those were a bunch cheaper.

Now, onto the oil pump chain part...I heard this from another guy too and it didn't make much sense to me. He told me to replace my oil pump chain because those stretch but my timing chains should be fine for a LONG time. Any truth to this?

Sorry about the misinformation, thanks for clearing that up scott..

He's right, the VH45 timing chains are designed to last the life of the motor (lets call it 250-300-350k miles) but the oil pump chain isnt the same design.

The timing chains stretch but less than oil chain..............about 1 degree of error per 100,000 miles assuming you use good oil and change it frequently.

Have had to reset CAS 3 times so far about ~~ 1.0 degrees per 100k.

I am at limit that manufacturer recommends for replacement ~~2% stretch. They say some of this is from wear on sprockets so they all should all be replaced 100% new oem parts [not Chinese copies].

Tensioners can fail [from internal gum up] we always replace both along with ALL GUIDES and bolts. The part you don't change is the next one to fail!
