I can use some help with a variable idle problem on my 95 300ZX. When I start it up it will normally idle up than die. Then I can start it again and it idles up and levels out. If I "blip" the accelerator the idle drops down, sometimes almost dying, and hunts up and down to level back out. If I blip the accelerator far enough and let off it will drop down far enough to stall the motor.

Right now the intake has blow off valves vented to atmosphere, I'm planning to recirculate. The motor also is also running JWT 500 cams. I can see the BOVs being a possible problem. What about the air idle control valve and related components? Anybody have any experience with diagnosing variable idle problems or have similar experience?

Check MAF and its connector. Check the ECU coolant temp sensor, and its connector. Check your TPS and its voltage levels. Adjust your idle to the correct level. Check for vacuum leaks.

http://z32.wikispaces.com has the information on how to do all of those things.

I won't be back home to figure it out for a couple of weeks. I'm doing preliminary research right now. I can use all the help I can get to figure this out. When I get to the house I'll be all over it.

What is the recommended factory idle set point?

Thanks for the info.

If your ECU is chipped, they may have a different idle set point. SZ sets theirs for 900 RPM, that's what I had to adjust to. If unsure, I would start by adjusting it to 650.

I think when the idle stabilizes 900 is about where it runs. It was tuned by SZ With the previous owner. I had been emailing with Greg @ SZ. He said 900rpm for idle. Another thing is I'll have to check up on the fuel pressure. The digital gauge reads excessively high. The average shows about 80psi. I know it should be at 43psi. I'll have to check that also and correct it.
