Again, I've dealt with this issue as well.
The reason you are smelling gas is because the burning oil is fouling your spark plugs.
The fouled plugs are producing a weak spark, and thus having a hard time burning the fuel.
The gas smell completely went away when I changed my plugs. It has not returned in several months, despite the engine continuing to burn oil.
The best way to change the plugs is to remove the upper and lower intake plenums.
This is a great time to change your PCV valve (it will be fouled and stuck) and inspect your lower plenum to see how many screws you are missing.
Like I said, I was missing eight screws and three of my butterfly valves were stuck inside the intake. I fished them out with a magnet.
I ordered some replacement screws from Fastenal and a helpful member here sent me a butterfly valve to replace one of mine that had cracked inside the intake.
This is also a great time to replace your upper and lower plenum gaskets.
I would also recommend checking your compression while you are replacing your spark plugs. It will give you an idea of how well your engine is doing.
Don't bother removing your throttle body from the upper plenum. Remove them as an assembled unit.
Check out the power valve screw sticky thread on this forum, or pick up a Haynes manual for good instructions on how to remove the plenums.
