After reading about what gear oil to put into my SR transmission, I came to the conclusion that GL4 oil was what I needed. I went my local auto parts store and found no GL4 only GL5. So my dad and I did some research and emailed Valvoline concerning their GL5 gear oil.

We asked Valvoline if it was ok to use their DuraBlend Gear Oil (a GL5 oil) in a Nissan 240sx manual transmission that requires GL4 spec oil.

They replied with this:

"Absolutely, all Valvoline Gear Oils can be used for both GL4 and GL5. The concern is the type of sulfate used in the gear oil, as you can not use an active sulfate for GL-4 applications. Valvoline uses an inactive sulfate that will not harm any yellow metal such as bronze. This allows our products to be used in manual transmissions that have bronze synchronizers."

Keep in mind that this is only Valvoline GL5 oil, I'm not sure about other brands.

I'm not an expert with this kind of stuff. I just thought it would be helpful to some people.

thats what any salesman will tell you, i've personally tried 3 different types, and the gl4 spec oil was better than all of them.

i tried lucas oil, penzoil, and redline. i spoke to a technician from lucas and he told me the same thing you just posted. It ran okay in my car but it just didnt feel right.

So next I got redline mt-90 and now it shifts like butter and in the cold weather it doesnt grind, it's the best stuff i've used hands down and its gl4.

just save your pennies and buy redline mt-90 or GL4 stuff and call it a day

stick to the specs in your nissan manual. they dont lie

edit: penzoil syncromesh was the worst of all of them. that stuff is like water, it would grind constantly.

I use penzoil syncromesh or Royal Purple. I used to use the Valvoline but the 1st to 2nd shift when the transmission was cold was horrible.

I totally understand that the Valvoline GL5 is not the best gear oil out there. I just thought it was interesting to know that this stuff doesnt hurt our synchros.

I don't get it? Why should I drain my RP? I have never even heard of that "silver" sh*t?

I ran Penzoil Synchromech from 2000-2004 and now I use Royal Purple 80w90 with no problems. The only reason I don't run redline mt90 is because that sh*t is impossible to come by unless you order it online which takes forever.

it doesnt hurt them right away, however its over time that kills you. gl5 will be fine for a couple hundred miles, however its recommended that it gets changed ASAP if you MUST use it at all.

I just put in some MT-90 and a Peak Performance trans mount in 2 days ago and it's the best sub $100 inmprovement I've made to the car.

I can down downshift into 1st on a cold trans, the old fluid no way.

It really does make a difference. I love it "brand new car". red line all the way!
