Valvetrain (?) Noise When Engine is Hot

So, I wanted to try this topic again.

About a month ago, I heard a slight tapping noise when the motor was at NOT. Not cold. Only when the coolant 180* or above. The noise sounds like it is coming from the intake cam around #4. I pulled the valve cover and rotated the engine to check clearance between the lifters and the cam, and there was no gap. The noise only happens when hot. It has gotten a little louder, but no worse. I have changed oil three times since (15W-50 Mobil1, 20W-50 GTX, and now to 10W-40 Syntec) with some Lucas stabilizer every time. I have also run a motor flush with one oil change. The other thing is that the noise only happens at medium load. Light load or idle, nothing. WOT, nothing. Only medium (crusing) load. It is driving me nuts!!

Alrighty dude, sounds like it time for some new lifters. Or worse, you maybe experiencing piston slap. If you can live with the noise, drive it till you have a reason to rebuild or start at the head and work your way down.

I'm already budgeting for at least 2 new lifters. I ordered them from Sealed Power, but they discontinued them (grumble grumble) Once I get moved, I will be getting some from Nissan.

I mean, mine didnt even make that much noise when I smoked two of them. Totally destroyed them on a rogue washer and it wasn't a whole lot noisier than usual. I would be worried about excessive noise.

This didn't even make that much noise, relative to the noise generated by the coils and the injectors.

Damn. That is why I am taking my gf's car to Plano (~3.5 hours) for my final job interview on Monday. I am pulling the cam on Tuesday and seeing what is up...

Ok, so it turns out that EVERY lifter on the intake is seized haha. I pulled the two intake lifters on #4 and soaked them in acetone till they freed up. Put em (and two new cam seals) back and all is quiet on the Western front.

But my buddy Cisco and I set my cams wrong, so the car runs like total a$$ haha. Other than that, my car is so much better. No more oil leaks. And only the whoosh of the BOV and turbo to sing me down the road.
