I just picked up a cylinder head from a local and now im stripping the valvetrain as he left it in there for me..now i know you need a valvespring removal tool for the springs. my question is do you guys have any experience with any certain ones? do you prefer any certain ones over others? i want a compressor tool that will work with ease and not give me a hard, pain in the @$$ time..and i also dont want to spend too much money

i heard the rental spring removal tools were junk. i remember someone saying about buying one from Snap On or Mac Tools. If anyone else chimes in, i was wondering how to go about removing the valve springs with the head on the car?

^^^ you are correct my friend this tool proved to be worthless, for the sr atleast..a good friend of mine told me you need this .. (second one down ) http://www.mytoolstore.com/kd/kdengi13.html..i have been looking at different compressors all day and i remember some of them saying in the description " works with cylinder head on and off the block and both manifolds" however if it works for the sr that i dont know...i do remember someone saying on here before that they have removed the springs with the head and manifolds on i just dont know who it was... i know you have to compress the valves with an air compression tester hooked up to an air compressor so you dont drop a valve

Dropping a valve is what im afraid of. Shops around here want $350 labor to change valve springs without removing the head. Unless i can get a detailed write up, ill wait to pull the head off and upgrade it all.

Are you switching them from the head you picked up to one you have installed already? I would say just pull the head off and do it. But with the valve seals still in place, I don't think the valve would just drop out. If so, use a magnet or grabber tool to hold on to the valve. It's gonna be a pain though. The second tool down (830) is used for the head already off I believe.

the ported head i picked up has stock springs. i am pulling them out and putting it upgraded ones..i was just curious as to what tool worked good..ive never worked with internals before but from what i was told, if you drop a valve with the head still on the block then you are screwed. you must pull the whole head off. this was from a very smart nissan fanatic too. however all you have to do when changing the springs with the head on is compress the cylinders with air.

wtf bring it to a shop.... well at least here in cali its cheap. i got my springs removed for $1 a spring... comes out to $16. My friend got it done at a different place for $20. It might be cheaper than you think. GOOD LUCK!

Decksy, which machine shop did you take your head to? I need machining work for my motor that I'm rebuilding along with a valve job.

I prefer the C-clamp style off the block spring removers. you can go with the "claw" (looks like the arcade crane/grab the stuffed animal type) removers for on the block but they are a pain in the butt some times esp compared to the c-clamp ones.
