I have a S12 VG model, so the motor is slightly different, but maybe you guys who have worked on the non-interference motor with W series heads may know what I'm on about here...

I started up my car after about 1 month of non-use. Battery was dead (of course) but the thing started right up after a jump. It was really bad ticking at start-up, but not as bad as a diesel or anything so I let it idle for about 1.5 hours to charge the battery.

I came back after the 1.5 hours to find the motor still idling loud. It sounded like the valves were tapping pretty loud to me. Is there a known issue with the VG W series heads like this? Is there anything I can put through the motor putting off the head change?

Perhaps I should check the pump or the channel to see if it is clogged a little? What do you think?

ack! where is he?!? from what i understand, valve ticking is pretty common for our engines..i let mine stall one night after some galavanting in a mall parking lot.. when i started it back up, it did the same thing. id never heard it before so i left it. when i picked it up the next day the noise got louder, and there was no oil pressure.poking at the intake cam from the oil fill doesnt fix it.. i tried that already. :D

Well, one more post and you can go buy yourself a VG30ET and pick it apart and get yer learnin' on. That's how I started, my absolute first motor to ever pull apart, too.

I still want my problem solved.

Its most likely one of the hydraulic lifters. The bleeding procedure is to run the engine at 1,000 RPM with no load for 10 minutes.

Adding half a quart or more of 20-50 weight synthetic blend oil might help, and then convert to full 20-50 weight synthetic blend next oil and filter change.

Synthetic? Yuck. I don't have enough invested in this car to justify spending that much on oil. Will dino oil be just fine? Also 20 is a little high. Are you sure I should be using such a high number? The highest I used in my turbo Z31 was 15-50...

Don't know how similar your motor is to a VG30DE, but I onced parked my J30 due to leaky water pump and waited a couple of months to fix it. I had to move the car every couple of weeks and before long I was more concerned about a loud clicking sound every time I started the engine (with about 167K miles on it), than I was about the leaky water pump.

After I replaced the water pump, timing belt and all, adding half a quart of 20-50 synthetic blend quickly quieted what was apparently a sticky lifter. The best $5+ I ever spent and synthetic really is more slippery. Next oil/filter change I switched over completely.

Not similar at all in terms of valves. The only thing a DOHC has in common with the SOHC is the bore/stroke of the cylinders/pistons.

Sorry.
