I think my Valve stem seals have had it. On coast down or coming down a hill im getting blue smoke happening. Has anyone done them before. Can they be done with the head on like some old cars. (with compressed air in the spark plug hole on TDC Compression) or is it a head off affair.

I say just remove the head...no sense risking dropping a valve into the cylinder... Although I heard if you tie a string to the valve stem it makes it easy to retrieve

Have you tried changing the PCV valve?

Crap!! Why didn't I think of that? I'm pulling the valves and a bunch of other crap on a 1982 corolla, but I could have just let the head be and pulled the intake and exhaust manifolds and pulled the valves out the ports.

Scratch that, I just got excited. I have to replace the hg anyway.

Is blue smoke while coasting a symptom of blown valve stem seals? And why? Have you checked your oil level? Drained your oil and checked for coolant? Checked your coolant level?

Check it out...so I tie a string to the top of the valve, crank the motor until the piston is at the bottom, compress the spring and remove the retainer, then fish the string out with a hook or something and pull out the valve. It may or may not work depending on the diameter of the cylinder relative to valve length, the diameter of the valve, and the diameter of the port.

It doesn't matter, like I said. I'm just working on this super-ghetto engine and I don't care if it's done right, as long as the thing will run. 1982 corolla, carbuerated. It just needs to drive like 10 feet, it's a company givaway/spoof. As long as you guys know where I'm coming from, I'm happy. I'm not crazy, just thinking of a lazier way to do stuff.

Dude, you CAN NOT remove a valve with out pulling the head off. It can't be done. I suppose you might be able to pull it off if the motor didn't have any pistons...
