valve shims???

i just bought a 90' model coupe.....needs a few things(outa junk yard). the dude says it needs valve shims???....i never heard of `em....and i workl for a auto parts store...any help or clarity would be great.

89 and90's 240 (single cam motor) have hydrolic lifters, so no shims needed.

later 240's (dual cam motor) use shims.

unless, of course, there's a dual cam motor in there.

Is there a reason why the guy thought the car needed a valve lash adjustment? Any odd noises from the valve train?
