Ok guys so as some of you know i am fully building my sr20, but this is the first one i have ever done, I have the head, and the block complete and put them together last weekend and torqued the headstuds down, after that i installed my HLA'S, shims which i measured and they were all 3mm then i installed the rocker arms and my new Tomie 270's no this is where i am at now, and im pretty sure i need to check the clearances between the rocker arm pad, and the cam lobe, but i just read on another site that the HLA'S don't need to be adjusted for and you only have to check clearances with solid lifters, im pretty sure this is BS but just wanted to make sure, also does anyone know what the clearance should be between the pad and the cam, i have not be able to find it anywhere...

That method is for solid lifter's. The FSM will give you a better example of how to check clearances. You measure from the top of the valve stem to the height of the retainer shim on the adjacent valve.

You're not satisfied with the way Nissan tells you to do it? WTF.

HLAs are self adjusting, so you don't have to check clearances between the rocker and the cam lobe. The only concern is to make sure that the rocker arm is level between the valves it actuates via measuring per the service manual.

Ok thanks for clearing that up, i wasn't sure how they could measure the valve clearance by just going off the valve stem height on one and the height with the shim in the next one, but i understand now, that your just trying to get the rocker arm level, so once they are level they don't need to be adjusted any more..

I bought the Factory service tool for doing all my shimming in the SR20's. Good luck finding differn't size shims though last year i called places all over the company and nobody had anything. I usually cut all the valve seats so the valve stems are same as factory height. Good luck with your build looks sweet!!

i no where i can get the shims online, I have the cams in it for now, once i get the motor in the car and more of the big stuff bought i think i will spend the $170 and buy the tool.. Although i may only use it once, i thought about takin an old HLA, then drilling a hole in the top of it and putting the post off the dial indicator into the hole, and welding it or jb welding it..

Where did you get the tool? I pulled a lifter, found a socket that fits the HLA hole with no play, JB welded my dial indicator stand to the socket and shazame! There was a very tiny bit of play, but I wrap the socket with Teflon tape and there is no play now.
