valve shim placement?

i'm replacing my ka's head. its off a 96 and when i took the old one out i turned it over and all the valve shims fell out. there are four shims that dont have little holes in the top of them, do these need to be placed somewhere special or does it not matter? also, is there a way to get the lower timing chain tensioner loose without taking the front cover off? i didnt put a pin in it and i cant get the sprocket for the top of it back on the head. please please please help, i really needed to get this done tonight...
