Should've taken it to a machine shop; especially if you don't have the proper equipment to do this with. But if you feel you must accomplish this yourself with your buddies, good luck!

Its very hard unless you have the proper tool. Most of the ones you can just go out and rent/buy are not up to the task of the CA engine and its deeply recessed springs/retainers/whatnot. I think nissan has a proper tool for it, runs about $50 IIRC. ARP makes one, and so does that crappy OEM brand as well as some others, but I have only heard about the nissan one NOT being a pain in the arse. I dont know if its worth $50 to you, but its worth a look.

I used a magnet and a small stick. It went OK for me. It's tedious work, but very doable.

actually, i have the correct tools at the shop. but one of my friends lost the one i use for when heads are off the motors. i have one but its more for when the head is on the motor and i use a air chuck to hold the valves up. the one i use for when heads are off support the base of the valve while compressing the spring using a screw system leaving you all the time in the world to place the keepers in. im trying to keep the valve shut and hold the lever down on this one, while attempting to get the keepers to seat, but the tool has magnatized and its sucking the keepers out of the retainer

i got all the intake valves done only to realize that when they put the valves in they put the exahaust valves in the intake side of the head... how the hell they did that i dont know . they just called me over because they couldnt get the keepers in.

when im not busy working on customer cars ill probably sit down and finish the head, plus ive gota wait untill he gets some new seals because he ruined a few trying to install them.

I used two small p0ker like screw drivers, one to hold the retainer (magnatized) the other to move it into the groove
