valve-like sound at top of rpms in each gear and consistently over approx. 55mph

I just read several replies to valve, ticking and tapping posts. My problem sounds very similar to the ones I have read, with the exception that the ticking noise I hear only beginnings JUST PRIOR to the gears changing while I'm accelerating. So the ticking noise happens at each gear change, although it is constant @ around 55mph.

Also, the noise is faster and lounder as additional gas is applied, but still ONLY as each gear nears it's max RPM. Also, if the car is in park while revving, the ticking noise begins around 2000 rpm, which is a little lower than while the car is movng.

Does this rule IN or OUT lubrication, lifters, injectors, valve tap or cam chain tensioner?
