I'm working on rebuild a ka24de and I now had an issue with the timing chain not being marked correct. When I first installed the change and installed the upper chain and turned the engine by hand, it stopped and I could feel it hitting the valves.
Later on after further inspection I noticed the chain was not marked correct and I then counted the links and made my own marks.
Now I turned the motor by hand and I can feel compression build up, but then I can feel/hear it coming through the valves. I have my compression tester in the spark plug hole to keep air from escaping and when I hit the air release on it, you can hear that it holds a little bit of air.
So what do you think? Do you think the piston may have damaged the valves? I have a new head gasket already installed so I'm not sure if I should pull it apart and check the valves or not. Perhaps I should lap them? When the head came back from the machine shop, he said it was fine and held pressure. I did pull the valves out to put in new seals, but I put the valves back in the original locations.
So what is your suggestions?
Also, I noticed the FSM says to Torque the head bolts and then loosen all the way and retorque them. Does anybody know why we do that? Does this mean I could actually use the same head gasket if I pull the head back off?
Thanks for the help.
