Ok, so I picked up my engine and head from my machinist and he said the valve lash still needed to be checked. I called a shop and they told me that they could not do it out of the car. Should I finish reassembling, get the car running then go have the lash checked?

if you never moved the buckets and are still useing the same cams you should be good to go, if you want to check your own valve lash there is a section on it in the FSM. basically the lash is controlled by a set of disks of varying thickness that sit atop the valve buckets, you can order these from nissan or you can shim them with shim stock. either way you need to torque the cams down to check the lash, i believe there is a tool to change the shims with the cams in place. but it wont hurt to shim it after you assemble the engine so long as you dont run it without checking them.

you can allso go to the junk yard and grab a s***load of shims off of a nissam maxima or other 240s that have the ka24de engine...then while you check your last..just adjust the numbers and do a little math..and meshure the shims ya got at the junk yard and match them as close as you can...the oem lash is a little sloppy and you can run tighter if you needed to..no need to take it to a shopp...just do one side at a time..and write all your numbers down for that bank..then find the best fitment for your extra shims....if you go to large..then you dont open the valve all the way..if you go to tight..you hold the valve open..as long as the bottom of the lobe on the cam does not contact the top of the shim..you should be ok..

as long as they have the head assembly, cams, and cam caps they could do the valve lash with just the head, they probably just don't want to because they don't normally have those shims in stock. there is a tool to push the bucket down and get the shim out with out pulling the cams, it's definately worth getting that tool. http://www.motionpro.com/motorcycle/partno/08-0017/ I'm not possitive this one fits, but thats what they look like

^thanks for the link i was gonna ask that(just checked its SR only). Also the machine shop i use did just as stated above. I dropped off the cams and caps. They are a import only machine shop so that might have something to do with them having the shims. But any machine shop should be able to do it if they have the cams and caps.
