ok so i still have issues after months of down time and money. all started when the car (s14 manual ka24de obd1, 43K) began making loud noises from the motor. I figured the tensioners went out so my mechanic from nissan replaced the entire timing components with all OEM stuff; both timing chains, tensioners, and revised guides. The car ran much better and smoother bc it turns out the timing was off by a tooth, but the noise is still there. from idle to redline, its like a loud chatter, metal on metal noise that increases with the rpm's and even louder when letting off the gas. So today we decided to see if the valve lash was off and the 1st exhaust valve on the no. 2 cylinder was quite significant. Took the cam off and there was side to side movement. He said that it is the valve guide and that i need a new head, better yet and cheaper, a used motor. Im not trying to argue with him because he always wins but do I have any other alternatives? any one with a similar problem? please throw ideas at me?

thx, George!!

okk so lemme rephrase the questions then:

1. has any one before broken a valve guide?2. what kind of noise does the motor make then if it is broken?3. Would adding more shims to the "lifter" quiet it down or make things worse?

thx again, George!
