my car ran fine before I took the top valve cover and the front cover off to take the timing chain off. after I put everything back, the car would idle for about 10 second then it would die. when I try to give it gas, the RPM would just dip then dies. is it because my valve cover is not sealed tightly? and yes I have adjusted the timing when I put my distributor back in(otherwise the car wont even start.) any help is apppreciated

Oh it can still start if its a tooth off, trust me. I would download the fsm and fallow the timing procedure again. I've seen this 100 times.

It would help if we knew what engine you have. :gotme
And your car can run without the valve cover on at all. Although it is not advised.

Yes recheck the cam timing then dissy timing, then check for hose and fitting breaks
