so my valve cover is off, I took it off to change it for one I painted.....

everything is pretty dirty but doesn't look like any excessive wear on the cam or rockers

Cam gear teeth look a little abused... the chaine guide on the driver side is gone, I see a little wear starting on the cover... chain is real lose, I can pull it like 1/2 inch... is that normal?

I'm thinking a timing chain job is in order soon... but this will give me an excuse to swap in a cam and crank pulley at same time!

also inspect and tear apart lifters...

what do you all think of the chain play?

the chain does make some noise when driving down the road, atleast thats what I figured it to be... now it kind of assures me thats what it was...

maybe I'll get some pics

HOLY CHAIN PLAY!!!!i really don't think it's supposed to be that much.in my de i only have about 1/8 in the top chain(my tensioner is stuck and doesn't really do it's job though), and the lower timing chain has almost none.

hopefully it'll last until I get a job and can buy a crank pulley/timing kit at the least... I'd like a cam but..... I hear the Nismo R4 is back ordered?

also I seen a video that it idles at 1100, and its not too good for autos.... maybe it'll work tho

im with ya on that bro. mine rattles for some reason, i thought maybe the plastic guide broke, but people are saying the tensioner does that. i figured to be on the safe sid i'd order the whole timing rebuild kit but what a ***** thatd be, and $330 i didnt have. i would much rather find a way to fix what i have. its really bothering me, im really scared to add power to my car til i get it fixed.

also Frsport(one of the sponsors) sells timing kits for about $130 if you don't trust the ebay ones.

single cams have a weird situation like that. but it all depends on where the cam is when the car stops to what it will have for tension. the back lash will loses up the un sprung side of the chain if the motor jurks back when it stops. because of the way the auto tensh works its on the "glide" side and not the "return" side. the side that will have variable amount of play is the return.

in simple turms, when the motor stops sometimes it can jump back a bit, thus making the other side of the chain lose. try bumping the starter and see if it goes away at all.
