I think you're referring to the piece that covers the coil packs and spark plugs.

Long skinny black piece?

it's part of it.You need to remove that in order to get the spark plugs and coil packs out.Ten cover the holes so nothing falls in.Then on your way to removing the cover.Have patience when removing and if you can left the front part left it and look under it to see why it wont come out so you don't yank it or force it.Good luck.

Yes! Even just looking at the diagrams will answer a lot of very basic questions.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate it. Now I got myself a project. I paid $1800 for this ride and the only thing wrong with it is leaking valve cover gasket which the guy threw in with the car. It's in great shape. I'm happy with it. Anyway thanks again.

Keep digging.....almost impossible not to find another $3000+ worth of worn parts that need replacing on a 15 year old Q!

I noticed the FSM doesn't show much where i was doing it.But maybe I'm wrong.Good luck. It's fun to learn how to do it but irritating if you can't get it out just keep in my look under it through the front to see what keeps it hold in the rear and you should be good.
