Measure your clearances the way the FSM says to, and compare it to FSM spec. If its out of spec you have to take out the cam, and remove the shim with any small pick from the top of the bucket. There is a notch in the bucket that allows you access to the under side of the shim.

Heres the crappy part about this job though. The shims are really freaken expensive. Pretty sure this is a dealer only item.

I'm just curious, why do you want to? You shouldn't really have to (hydraulic lifters don't need adjusting)....it's not a honda

To answer your question though- no special tools, and I'm pretty sure that's a dealer thing...or at least I would go OE on it if I needed to replace something like that.

My apologies if you've done major head work requiring this type of deed to be done, but it kinda sounds like you want to do it just because.....

well, i just swapped a 95 motor in and the valve is hella ticking...dont know what the other owner has done to it before, but it really sounds like a very loose valve.....but yea, i called the tool guy that i go through and there is a tool that i can use to take the shims in and out without removing the cam..just like toyotas......but the shims cost 12 bucks a piece and there is about 20 sizes....so either way, i have to see what ones i need then replace it.....but thanks for all your info. tho.....

go to a junk yard..break the cams off of a front wheel drive maxima with the ka24de in it..grab all the shims ya like..i have 50 extra myself..and pay about 5 bucks..the tricky part is meshuring your lash properly..a good idea is..to mesher each bucket to bottom of cam lobe..your looking for the maximum thickness of the feelaguage that will fit ...write each one down carefully..then..remove the cams...with a strong magnet..remove the bucket over the valves that holds the shim..inspect your spring/retainers for damage while your there..remove the shim and meshure the shim...from there is math..see how much of a difference is needed to reach the lash requierment...now the fun part....all those extra shims ya got from those pesky maximas rotting in a yard..start meshuring to find a close one..then replace the old shim...make shure..you only remove (1) bucket at a time..and make shure you put it back rite where you got it...good luck
