What's up fam? I'm off the plantation so I'm writing. I just paid $400 for this Valentine One. I'm driving to both my schools (undergrad/grad) homecoming in Concord/Charlotte NC and staying there until NBA AllStar in Atlanta. I know you guys have a great opinion of V1 but I have to see this myself. And Troopers on 95/85 south are SLICK! Hope it works out. Me and a friend are driving. He has a 2002 Accord coupe. I'll try not to leave him! Poor soul! It looks nice though. If I get tint, will affect the coverage of radar behind me and to the side?

Tint will affect it, but I'm not sure how much. I've even heard of some windshield's giving poor reception because they were manufactured with metal. You'll figure it out soon enough after you've passed a few troopers in the oncoming lane.

Yeah. It better be worth all the so called *ss whipping test it supposedly has been winning for years. Heard the Passport 8500 was better but after researching I dont think so.

I have a V1 and I won't use anything else. Not saying it's the best or not, just that I haven't ever needed anything better in the 4 years that I've owned it. Keep it on the most sensitive setting when you're on a road trip. You'll soon be able to tune out false alarms and they won't bother you at all (Most stores and supermarkets give off signals from their security systems). Then you forget about it until every time you give someone a ride and they complain about all the noise its making.

I agree on the V1... bought one back in the fall for "Q2." I've only driven the car once since then and since the DC wire connection is different than the one for my old Passport 5500 in "Q1" that's the only time I've used it. The sensitivity was excellent and the bogey counter and arrows were great. It was really funny to see how it found all four radar sources at a nearby intersection (two gas stations and two grocery stores).

I doubt it's a fair comparison between a detector with 9 or 10 year old technology (the 5500 is the first LCD display Passport made) that's been baking in my windshield since 1995.

I also sprang for the concealed display module... and I really like it! I mounted it and the controller for the NEO MP3 player right under the defrost switch so it's nicely concealed. The auto dimmer is also nice... I think it's well worth the extra $100.

I have had the V1 for about three years now, (and the concealed display module) and it works great. Has saved me on a number of occasions where I just know I would have received a ticket! Only missed once, where it went off (instant LIDAR) too late for me to stop racing the BMW 740 next to me after taking off from a light. The cop gave me the ticket since I was ahead of the 740! I don't know whether to be sad or happy about that! :D

The concealed display module is excellent - allows me to leave the radar up on the dash at night and no one can tell that it is a radar detector from behind me since the actual display is down below the level that anyone can see when on the road.

Let's hear it for the V1.

I wish I could count the number of times it's saved my license.

BTW: Anyone seen the new V1's? They are about a 1/4 inch thinner than the older (but still laser) units. Just thought that was neat. . .

I have always mounted my detectors above the rearview mirror, usually resting the unit on the top of the mirror, and then ran the power cord along the top of the windshield, and down the pillar to the fuse box, tapping in to an ignition wire, so the unit operates only when the ignition is on, and there is no tell tale light when the vehicle is parked. Will be putting a 4th vehicle into service soon, so will probably spring for the V1 for the Q, putting its old PP into the Suburban (yes, folks, a suburban is needed for the farm operation! Not a new one, because I could not stand to trash a new one like this older one is going to get trashed.)

John! Haven't heard from you in a while... or at least didn't recognize the user handle. Is the TCU still working well?

The concealed display is the same display as the front of the V1 unit, except you don't have volume control, but the push button controlls all of the other features.

Here's a pic of it in Q2 mounted below the NEO MP3 Controller... sorry it's a bit blury

You might also check out the V1 web site site... very good stuff!

Working wonderfully, thanks! Q just turned 108K, and I continue to marvel at it! Had to spend $19 bucks for an oil pressure sending unit on recent Mobil 1 oil change, so that brings my total repair bills to $54 dollars! May go over to T3 for the 120K service, and have all the stuff under the plenium done too! Road trip out to NM in Novemenber shows why I think early Qs are one of the best road cars ever! Take care Heath! You would not belive the growth that continues here in the low country! Unbelievable! Time for us to start making like boll weavils, and look for another home! Too crowded any more! Too many yankees!

I think I'm going to get the concealed display. In some states (DC and VA). It is illegal to use. It works very well but you have to use common sense too and use somebody as a guinea pig ahead of you! That damn laser/instant on!

Yeah! That instant on LIDAR (laser) is what got me some time back. Oh, well ... it wasn't too bad. I was speeding off from a light (with a BMW 740 next to me) and was clocked at 51mph in a 35 zone just a very short ways from the light. Like I mentioned earlier, I got the ticket since I was ahead of the 740.

LOL That's true. I stopped by in Atlanta during a cross-country trek and I noticed tons of people with New Yawk and New England accents...
