New guy here, hi!I have an '81 2wd standard cab long bed with the z22, I've been lurking the forums a bit, and I'm considering doing away with the mess of vacuum lines. It's my understanding that "Keep the distributor vacuum advance, cap off everything else" is the goal, but is there other stuff to keep in mind? IE, all the emissions crap I'm removing, can I leave it in place with no vacuum lines attached, or must I pull it out entirely, and that sort of question.

Also, I'm on the prowl for haynes/chiltons/factory service manuals, and I'm curious as everyone's stance on which one(s) I should hunt down for the best general information.

I ripped out everything: lines, canisters, relays, whateverwasconnected. It's so much easier to work on the vehicle now. That said I see no reason you can't keep the stuff in there as long as it's not connected to anything but the added room with all of it removed shouldn't be overlooked.

1. If its disconnected, why leave it in there. More room = easier to work.

2. The chilton explains how some things work where the original manual doesn't. I have the original but I'm looking for a chilton.

I have both of Haynes, the 1980-1986 and the Pickup and Pathfinder. It took awhile to track the first one down. The Pickkup and Pathfinder covers too many years. I have found that the diagrams aren't the same between the two. One is better than the other, depending on what you are looking for.

Still looking for a Chilton's.

I have the Chilton's want to get my hands on the Haynes and also have the Nissan FSM edition 1 for the 83 model. Both Haynes and Chiltons use diagrams from the FSM.

You can get a Chiltons or Haynes manual from Oreilly's auto. They are in the switch over from CSK and the new manuals are Haynes, but they may still have the Chiltons on the shelf.

I now have an 81 FSM and a 80-82 720 Haynes in the mail, both for super cheap, gotta love E-bay. The Haynes seems oddly year specific, so I'm rather interested in it, not seen any other of it. Pic of the cover says "1980 thru 1982, all 2WD and 4WD models. 2.0 liter L20B and 2.2 liter NAPS-Z engines"

Also, looks like vac lines is gonna have to happen sooner rather than later, noticed a couple lines cracked nearly through, looks like they got kinked at some point. I've never done too much on cars before, and I gotta ask, how do I shop for new vacuum hose?

Cpt, you'll need mostly 4mm, or 3/16 hose. Get it by the foot. You'll need at least 10', but I'd get 15'. Don't get talked into brake hose, its too thick. There isn't enough room in places to use it.

Be careful when you are taking the old ones off. Some of them have restrictors in them. Its a small brass fitting that is far enough up that you won't see it. You can feel it though.

The diagrams leave a lot to be desired. Take pictures. Lots of pictures. Make your own diagrams.

Dogred, is Chilton's using the diagrams from the FSM? I know Haynes is, but the earlier Haynes have more supplemental diagrams. The Pickups and Pathfinders, the one available new, really is too broad for some things.
