I have a 1994 240sx vert. and i have been throwing around the idea of removing the factory spoiler. My question is: in VA are you required to have a 3rd brake light? (3rd brake light is part of the spoiler)

thanks for the help in advance!

well depends on where you get it inspected honestly. you are not required to have one if your other lights are visible, but if its inoperable (you disconnect the ligt and leave the spoiler) then they can ticket you or fail inspection. id take it off and just fill the holes. they wont fail you for not having the spoiler itself unless your city itself has tougher ordinances.

Nice, manassas here. You will be fine if you remove your spoiler, you dont need a third brake light. I used to work at Merchants Burke......(dont take your car there.. please..) as an inspector/tech assistant. As long as every visible light is working your fine.

general rule of thumb if it looks stock, and its not obvious that its not stock, then removing or adding lighting to your car is highly unlikely to get you a ticket cops dont know what the car is supposed to have here in VA, and there is no modifying law preventing removal or addition of a spoiler as long as you arent removing your only brake light on the vehicle. you do need at least 2 working tail lights though, you can have as many over that as you want

I know in NH the law states that if the vehicle came factory with a 3rd brake light then it must be functional. All new vehicles come with one therefore you should have it on the average car. However, the likelihood that an officer is aware of the fact that your car orginally had one is pretty slim, I personally would chance it. They can't prove you are supposed to have one if there is no evidence of it's former existence. They don't have a book in the patrol car of which vehicles had them and where.

I live on the outskirts of manassas really. Yea i think i know where you work, although i dont use many shops except Legett Tire in manassas. I have a business relationship with them and am cool with the owners. They do my all my tire work and inspections. Its a good shop too, they have some really knowledgeable techs.
