Oil / filter changes are the least costly of the maintenance requirements. Why would one want to continue to circulate the same oil for longer periods and higher mileage? Especially since oil is the life blood of the most expensive part to replace - the engine.
My dealer now does all my oil / filter changes. They use my oil (Mobil 5w30) and they provide an OEM filter and OEM drain bolt washer. They also measure brakes, tire tread, check fluids, etc. I am happy to pay $45 twice yearly (5,000 miles) for the peace of mind.
Not a quirky question.
In my mind, I trust my novice skills more than I trust others being as thoughtful and complete in fulfilling a task. I've had success doing all maintenance myself for the last 8 years. Only expressions being wheel alignments and purging and filing the A/C system (I replaced the parts myself).
I've learned that by doing things myself it becomes very easy to identify when things look, sound, and act normal vs worn, broken, or otherwise unexpected. I have a better piece of mind knowing the status of everything as opposed to relying on someone else's judgement.
By no means am I a skilled mechanic. I prefer to do my own work for my own peace of mind, saving a few bucks (not much), and learning new skills.
As to answer your question about running longer OCIs....
It is a bigger PITA to change oil on this car which is why I prefer to do it less often. If I can while still retaining the desired performance, than I will. I've also never used anything besides Motocraft synthetic blend which lasted me no problem to 5000 miles. A group III synthetic should be able to extend that another 50% easy (7500 miles).
