Started out as a R&R on a water pump. Didn't set TDC so started from scratch. Pulled the intake, valve covers, loosened the rocker studs and rolled the crank to #1 TDC. Set the cams at the alignment marks and replaced the belt. While the plugs were out I rolled motor over a dozen or so times with no binding.replaced the distributor and set it at #1 wire ( I never pulled the wires from the cap so location is correct) put everything else back on and fired it. Fired off okay but on the road under load it has valve chatter or knocking. Reset the timing, moved it a tooth each way and it's still there. What have I done WRONG!!

Are all the cam bushings tightened down? Did you tighten everything down? I'd put my money on something being loose in there.

I never took the cams out, I just backed off the bolts holding down the valve rocker shaft. I did that so I could roll the cams with out the valves hitting a piston. Next.Valve locks? When I tightened the rocker shafts back down I did it in steps not to torque one side to tight and cause a bind. The motor rolled over like butter with no spark plugs in it. So what I'm wondering is can the cams be off a few degrees one belt tooth and still run not hitting a piston?
