Its not the space in the middle that is quench area, its the pads on the sides. The quench area in effect forces the a/f mixture towards the center of the combustion chamber, where it burns quicker, more uniformly, and more completely. Hence, making more power with less chance of detonation At least, this is how I understand it.

Crossflow-the Valves are accross from eachother in a hemi design allowing the air/fuel mixture to enter the cylinder on one side of the hemisphere and leave on the other side. if that helps at all.

this pick may help a little. its a pentroof hemi meaning it is not exactly a hemi but the same idea of crossflow.
