Haven't been around here in quite some time, busy with finishing up college.
In any event I was able to pick up this intake on Craigslist for about 150.00 so I decided even if all it does is change the tune, whatever it will give me something to do on a Sunday.
So story of this is I had the install instructions that came with the kit, but lost them, took me a week to get an email back from Injen with the .pdf, then had my last semester of college to deal with LOL. Finally had a few hours to install it today and here we are.
All I'm going to do in this post is just give pointers because obviously, the kit comes with detailed instructions. I'm just going to point out where the instructions SUCK and waste your life and make you want to punch yourself in the face. Also apologies for the crappy pictures, could not for the life of me find the camera or the DSLR....had to use the cell phone
First you get to take off the engine cover and bumper...obviously....
There are two difficult bolts you have to take off from inside the wheel wells on both sides. Basically you have to pry back the inner fender liner to get a wrench in. One of them isn't too hard, however another one you can't really get at without a ratchet extension and a universal joint thing. I was able to get the bolt off, but couldn't get it back in, luckily it doesn't hold up too much. Luckily I did not take a picture of them lol.
So next you need to start removing things, again there are detailed instructions so I'm just going to give pointers.
The next thing to look out for is that the instructions tell you to remove the air scoops that are attached to the core support. They tell you to do this before you actually remove all the air intake boxes and the like....well after 30 minutes of crying I figured out you have to remove all the stuff BEHIND the air scoops before you can get at them (Steps 32 - 45 BEFORE steps 30 - 31........)
Next you have tackle the relocation of the horn. Basically I just bent one of the brackets to get at the back of the horn. Then you need to disassemble the brackets and put it back in place; try to point the horn down so it doesn't fill with water (duh). Here's what it should look like
Next difficult part is getting the passenger side intake lined up properly with the new washer fluid reservoir. Just take your time and fit the filter in before you attach the reservoir (the instructions say to do it the other way but the filter won't fit)
Last odd part was on the drivers side there is what I assume is a high pressure brake line (it had an H on it lol) and it kinda rubbed up against the intake. All I did was take a little pressure and bend it slightly out of the way.
So now you're done, enjoy your handywork!
Of course after you are done you need to sit back and crack open your drink of choice
Oh and don't throw away the "extra parts"
So obviously I didn't take toooo many pictures, this is mainly because the kit comes with decent instructions. I just wanted to give people thinking about installing this kit themselves a few friendly pointers I ran into. The manual says it should take about 2 hours.....took me FOUR, and I consider myself decently handy when it comes to working on cars.....though there were many breaks due to frustration and tears lol. Overall the kit is pretty decent, I had to resort to finding a video online of some chicks installing the kit on their G to help me find a few of these odd things that stand out (if anyone needs the video I can email it to them...it's on youtube lol) but it fits together pretty darn well.
Onto the $5,000 question - was it worth it. I think I have seen people saying "OMG 15HP 11FT/TQ TO THE WHEEEEEELS" and I'm sure it's debatable. It DOES feel a bit punchier when you drop the hammer, but that's just seat of the pants feeling there. Where it really does make a difference is in the sound. At idle the thing is just as quiet, if not quieter than stock. However use the go pedal and the thing screams. It's a nice throaty deeper sound, not tinny or anything. When I actually hunt down my camera I can shoot a video clip and post it up.
Overall it was a good waste of 4 hours, and I feel like it was worth the money and the time. If anything the look on peoples faces when a sedate sedan screams past is totally worth it.
