I have seen this on a few 240sx and Silvias, along with the RX-7s. I know Signal Auto does this modification. I was curious to know if mounting the intercooler in this position had any benifits to it? I'd say just to protect the intercooler for straight on rock collision. Does anyone have any more information on this mounting position?

i true vmount (not topmount) is a very good idea. it has a lot of benefits. with the right induction pushing the air from the front of the car, out of the hood, its better than a fmic. i believe the main reason its done on rx7s is the heat they generally produce. that an a lot of room in the engine compartment after you get rid of all the egr crap, bad wiring, bad vacuum hose placement, and and that jazz. what the vmount does is make a v with the intercooler and the radiator. this eliminates the problem with the fmic covering the radiator, (thus letting the radiator get cool air on the hot 13b).the sr is also a very warm natured engine (which is why you see it on a lot of silvias now)bottom line: great setup. costly.

is signal the only shop that does this? I see that you have to cut into the frame on the front which can be added by getting a strut bar.

You will have problems with engine and intercooler clearance. Rotarys are very small engines compared with their piston driven cousins.

true that rotaries are small engines...but that engine bay is very cramped. I have considered the option many times...but well, first I have to get a turbo. Most ppl who do this will have to get rid of their ac.

The advantages I've heard, (w/an inverse cowl hood) is that of great cooling both to the radiator and the intercooler. Some ppl believe it's dangerous for air flow, but if done right it should work beautifully. If you want to, I can link you to some of the rx7 threads.

here's a great one discussing pro's and cons.http://www.teamfc3s.org/forum/...style

and here's a search:http://www.teamfc3s.org/forum/...nding

Personally, I think that a water to air ic would be ideal...;)

I've seen it done on SRs before, but the motors also placed farther back in the engine bay (not the cheapest thing to do)you can probably retain the AC, but if you're going that all out, I don't see why you would care that much about practicality. Another good thing about the V-mount is the throttle response, due to the shorter intercooler piping. Also, the front overhang is less compared to a FMIC. The angle of the V supposedly makes a difference with the cooling capacity, but I think can be remedied with pull type fan behind (or underneath?) the radiator, and a push fan in front of the intercooler.A neat idea, but many more effective ways to spend money in the name of performance. It's one of those one day things (unless you got a rotary in your 240:D )
