So I put a helical differential out of an S15 in my car last weekend...This post is lacking in content for how many pages it has so I figured Id help out.All thumbnails are clickable for a bigger view...If you want bigger then then for some reason, click the pic then deleted the -med from before the .jpg at the end of the URL. S15 HLSD, S15 HLSD axel flanges, and Nismo ring gear bolts. There we are sans diff. With a buddy it wasn't too hard, but this thing can get pretty heavy if you have to hold it for any decent legnth of time. Old diff after I yanked it outa the case. It has shims on both sides that I bagged and labeled to keep straight. The original S13(S14?) ring gear bolts are 12mm, but the ones on the S15 were 13mm so you need a bolt with a 13mm shank and 12mm threads (or some kinda spacer). Ive heard the nismo bolts are hard to find but here is the part #The original ring gear on the helical now. I had to take it to a shop that thing is on there tight. The S13 ring rear torque specs are like 98-112 and the S15 is some where around 150...Since the threads are what are holding it and they are they same size as the S13 I went with that spec and had them torqued to 112.Here we see the S15 diff back in the case. I found it easiest to put it in with out the shims, center it then tap the shims into place a little bit at a time using a piece of wood to soften the blow of the hammer, being careful not to get wood chips in the diff.
Backlash was pretty much the same as the old diff, so IT SEEMS that if you re-use the shims on the same sides the side to side placement of the diff is the same reguarless of what OEM R200 internals you are using. Since the diff uses the same ring gear wich is still centered on the same point pinion depth should be the same. This has been the findings of the other installs I have read up on too....Im not gonna be responsable for any misshaps so make your own inferances there...
The old paper gasket stuck like glue and took tons of scraping with a razor and solvent and a wire brush but finaly came off. I used RTV and put it back together.
Haven't really gotten to put this thing through its paces, but both wheels deffinatly spin through a slide, and the rear seems to grip real well coming out of turns (what else would you expect?)Dropping the diff out was pretty easy with a helper, and a jack...install seemed even easier. The axel flanges deffinaly take some hammering to get out of the case though
