Car should be running next week, still need to make the driveshaft and figure out a downpipe, I will post pics this week, we had to do a custom transmission mount for it.

the guy who owned the car never finished, had something to do with the pathetic attempt at downpipe mods ee did for him as well as the botchy wiring. he could barely get 2100 for the motor because nobody wanted it since ee touched it.

Why not hold onto the transmission for when one of the 12 guys in the states with a legal R shreds his gearbox? You can sell it to him.

They could get it from anyone... chances from me is like 2 percent. its worth more to me to try modding it and save money. baside like I said, I having people who just fab stuff all day along modding it.... I'm sure they can figure something out....

Seriously dude you have a RB26 stick in your *** dont you? Your anti everything because no one else has done it but from the looks of it the only thing that would be the problem is welding shut the hole which Im sure a good welder can do. Id much rather pay 250 for a shaft and couple hundred at most to have it welded than spend 1000 on a RB25.

I think that was for me?

I don't have a stick in my ***, I do however understand that for many people they have $100 dreams and $2 budgets and this is at least $89.75.

I am not anti anything except polka.

Tons of people have done this, it's not new. I have talked with and examined the work of people who get paid large amounts of money to do this, one with an RB26 Silvia that clicks off tire-smoking 10-second passes in mainland. It is not something a guy does in his driveway with a sawzall and a stickwelder.

What you see as negative I intend as reasonability. If the person working on the project is capable and understands all the pros and cons of it I wish him much success. The thing I see too much of on the net though is people jumping in with both feet and winding up ****ed. All the people that were saying "hell yeah, you can do it" are now like "aw dude that sucks". You know what, that is a bunch of BS, most people don't give a **** that someone is out cash and time. I tell it like I see it to save someone the heartache of a mistake. It CAN be done and there are reasons to do it but you better be sure you CAN do it otherwise you have a useless chunk of metal now and you still need a transmission.

does this stick smell funny to you?

LOL thats great, BTW dude normally I wouldn't be attemping this but I have the better of 3 people at my uncle's shop that are 30+ professional welders, that can make anything out of alumium their for its worth the risk, because I know that when its in the car I don't have to wonder weather or not the JB weld is going to hold today.

Well I guess it looks easy for me since I know two long time welders tha do nothing but Aluminum and Stainless. So it would be quiet easy for me and my friends to get it done.

seriously, it shouldnt be that hard. the diff is a mechanical piece. take it out, and cut the housing off. that doesnt seem hard. and welding cast aluminum isnt hard if you know what you are doing. a good tig welder can weld cast aluminum perfectly fine. you wanna know what really hard to weld? magnesium and cast iron. try those and then tell me that cast aluminum is hard. (im a welder, i get tired of people saying things like this, its simply not true)

oh and bill this isnt directed to you, i just hit the reply button on your post. good luck and let us know how it turns out.

and if you cant get it welded, drill and tap the flange you have from cutting off the transfer case housing and bolt a plate on. seal it up and itll work just fine.

Magnesium? Doesn't that burn and after it it ignites is incredibly difficult to put out?

exactly, but it can be done. high frequency. tig really doesnt produce the heat that mig does, at least not in the uncontrolled state. its amazing what the shield gas can make metal do. but when it does burn, mag lets off a pretty white flame that captivates you until the toxic gas knocks you out and slowly drifts you off to the gentle embrace of death.... but it sure is purty!

Yeah what he said Cast iron wasn't too bad with a few stick passes with a mud rod... but it was water drain pipe, so it didn't need to be pretty.

I think an important distinction needs to be made between "cast aluminum" and "cast pot metal". Mostly pure cast aluminum (like isnt terribly hard to weld with a skilled hand (and foot) and a TIG welder. Pot metal is the leftovers, and very impure stuff used to make non critical parts... for instance the headlight bracket on my R6 - which was -horrible- to weld when it snapped. Even cleaned up it wouldn't TIG or spool gun properly.

I'm going to agree with all the other posters and say "It can be done." But, wether or not its worth it is up to you. As we start seeing more AWD swaps, the AWD setups will become more desireable, so I personally wouldn't be hacking it apart.

ha ha yeah. pot metal. i got my little brother to try and weld this little piece of the absolute crappiest aluminum to "learn" how to weld it. after about 10 minutes and sharpening the tungeston 5 times, he got angry stomped the foot pedal and turned it into an oozing puddle of gross. later he was like " why did that flaky white stuff come out of it" i laughed. not even all aluminum. sooooooooooooo many impurities.

transmission cases (at least japanese... ) are almost the same compostion as plate aluminum. you wont see a big difference welding the two. they need to be as such. cause they want the casing to flex as much as totally possible, and crap metal dont like to be flexin so much.

Haha, I can almost picture him nailing the pedal and hurling obcenities at the piece as he executed it.

Bring a dead thread back... has anyone had any luck with this?

Also can you just put in the awd transmission and dent in the tunnel like fullrace did on the R14 and just not connect the front drive shaft? Will it stay in rwd without the hydrolic and electronic attessa system?

Its obviously possible and has been done...http://www.turbomagazine.com/f....html

Mike your gasket is at the shop with tom, I have the headbolts for you here at the house.
so you're saying that the transmission on R33GTR and R33GTST are the same? Isn' the GTR a 6spd?

Also, will a RB26DETT engine fit w/o modifications on my existing RB25DET transmission?

zer...66310

this thread i made is pretty new. try diff searches next time.

fyi i believe anything is possible, but will it be worth time and money?

secondly what u jus did is something i hate when others do...ask a question then give the answer, like sorta telling us to agree. Then y ask? sorry jw

1st only the r34 gtr is a 6spd.2nd yes they will, read on...

they are similar. not sure about internals but externally they mate up no prob. ie RB25DET transmission to rb26 engine. in fact i think after all my reading that it seems all rb trannies are interchangable with one others ENGINE block.

i got that conclusion with hearing that people use rb25de, rb25det, rb20 transmission to rb26 engine. SO the mating surface has to be the same. however the bell housing that connect to transmission are diff. atleast the 25 compared to 26.

i've never tried myself so take it as u will. if im wrong on anything someone please correct.

The next hurdle is to find out how to keep that transmission in rwd. (Sorry ATpossible, but I'm going to do it again) Lets just say that you dont connect the hydrolic line on the back of the transmission that goes to the atessa system, will that keep it in rwd? Seeing how the system is rwd biased anyway.
