I have often wondered that with the CVT if one could put the transmission in reverse and then use the paddles to change gears, effectively going just as fast in reverse as one could go in forward... Anyone tried that yet? I'll wager Nissan already thought of it and the transmission will stay in whatever preset gear reverse is supposed to be, that way someone couldn't go 65 MPH down the freeway in reverse...

Cars equipped with a CVT can, theoretically, travel in reverse just as fast as they can in forward. I haven’t tried it with my Rogue, but it would make sense that they would have installed a limiter to prevent just that. Unless someone is incredibly adept at driving a forklift (rear wheel steering), I wouldn’t try 60 mph in reverse. Here is a link that explains why they had to put CVT equipped cars in a seperate catagory at the Dutch Reverse Driving Competition.

I found a big empty parking lot today and stuck her in reverse and went several hundred feet backwards in a straight line. I tapped both paddles to see if I could toggle it to go up or down and ... drum roll.. nothing, nada, zip, zero. One gear only. Just as I had thought. But hey, sometimes you never know what the engineers forgot about...So, one speed going backwards only folks!

This reminds me a little of a discussion on the Honda S2000 Forum back in 2000. When the S2000 is revved toward redline, especially the original 9000 RPM redline version, there is a point where VTEC kicks in and explosively propels the car much faster.

The discussion was about hitting the VTEC point when in reverse (yes, same effect).
