using steering wheel controls on aftermarket radio

Are you talking about the PAC mod? You should be able to hook it up and go.

Yes you do need the resistors.

Nope. 5th gen max's have two wires for steering wheel controls. You have to add a resistor to the lines to differentiate them to the module. Then you have to program them as to what to do when you hit each button. Somewhat of a pain but no where near as bad as the older ones that used ir eyes to control the deck.
