After speaking to an friend about large turbos in the last week, he suggested a Holset HX35 unit from the 5.9L Cummins Diesel engines. He will able to supply me with one rebuilt for a very good price (much less than $1k AUD), so plans for the VF22 have been put right back.

i'd like to hear from anyone with experience with this particular turbo, or know of someone using one.

And for those that say it won't spool til 6500rpm on the SOHC KA, this guy is running one on a 2.3L 4 cylinder mustang and is making 28psi by 4000rpm. Apparently it's the go for upgrading 2.3L turbo Volvo's in Europe too. http://msvorinich.itgo.com/Jan0703.html

Holset's website list max. flow at a pressure ratio of 3.0:1 (30psi) at 0.46 kg/s, or approx. 60 lb/min. Enough for 600hp at the fly on the KA with a 1mm overbore. :D

I just replaced my T3/T4 with the Holset HX35W from the Cummins, I am still breaking my motor in, but that things spools just like the t3/t4, but seems to flow much more air. Once I dyno it, I will let you know more.

I thought those turbos are way too big for a 2.4L, keep us posted on how it spools on a KA.

We had to make a external WG to fit it, but the damn thing skyrockets to 10 psi very quick, right around 3k, I am only running 370's, stock MAF, and no timing management. I at least need the BTM to keep from blowing the motor, I just keep backing off around 5 psi, but I'll keep ya'll posted.

if it spools on a 2.3ltr ford, it should spool a little quicker on a 2.4 right?

Keep us updated driftjunke! Sounds awesome....can't wait to get my hands on this turbo :D

Can you do me a favor and measure the diameter of the compressor housing? I have a feeling it'll be a real tight fit in my fwd engine bay.

i know a few volvo guys using it on the b240ft's... they spool fairly quickly... and are cheap as hell to pick up...

would make a good match for a high boost setup on the 2.4... especaly w/ an extra 8 valves over the volvo's engine

we all must remember diesel's produce less exhaust gas per capita than a gasoline motor, so a 5.9L diesel isn't going to be running a turbo anywhere near as big as say a 5.9L gas engine.

what toki said...

the garrett (SP) that was used on the 1.9L TDI vw engines... is ideal for a 1.0L petrol engine...

but that being said the HX35 holset is supposidly around the size of a 60 trim t04... nice sized turbo...

i'll see if i can't dig up pics :)... one guy runnin a holset on the volvo has one w/ a 4" v band exhaust :)... 4" exhausts are just kewl :)

Right now I am having not so fun of a time with it, I am running an internal wastegate, and haven't had much time to play with the setup to keep it from boosting past 8 psi, I am running 370's and no timing management, waiting for the BTM. I just replaced the rings and the #4 piston so I am still breaking in the motor, and am running only a 3 inch downpipe, so I don't want to blow my motor. Once I do the exhaust tommorrow, it should spool quicker, right now it's hitting 10 psi between 3500 and 4000. I'll throw up some pics tommorrow, to show the sizing.

Thats a big ole turbo...Does it have ball bearings? I know it comes from a diesel, but it spools up WAY fast. 28psi by 4000rpm on a 2.3L is amazing!

I can get one of these in REALLY good condition for free, but I kinda ruled it out for the shear size of it but would it work just as well as a T3/TO4E .63 for around 8 psi.

What truck uses the 5.9l cummins? And what years? Might have to call some scrap yards!
