I have swapped out a 1985 Nissan 4x4 2.4 liter motor with a 1986 2.4 liter motor. Everything worked except the distributor. The one that is for the 1986 was throttle body injected and the distributors are different. The connectors have four wires but the plugs are different and the colors of the wires are different. I also cannot use the one out of the 1985 because the shafts on the distributors are different. Am I stuck switching to injection? Any help anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated. Steve.

What does the distributor bolt to? You might be better off just stepping back farther and farther until you can swap an entire assembly over to make it work.

Was the lower end bad on the old unit, or the head? I would think at worst, you could swap the entire head/manifolds over.

It bolts to the front of the block and the bottom of the head. I am not sure what was bad on the motor I inherited the project due to a local mechanic passing away and the engine was already purchased. I had already swapped the intake this is the last hurdle to cross.

Unfortunately I'm not too familiar with those engines to definitively say what you can and can't do. Do you still have the old engine? If not it sounds like you'll either have to swap heads or distributors and go fuel injection.

Thanks I am really thinking about swapping to fuel injection. Either way it will take some time. Thanks Steve

Are the oil pump shafts different where they fit into the distributor?

They are different. I even tried taking two distributors one from the 85 and one for the 86 to make the right one and was stopped by a part that was pressed onto the shaft.
Thanks Steve

Steve, will the pump shaft from the 85 fit the 86 oil pump? If it will, use it and the 85 distributor.

No different ends. Would there be some way to find out how to wire it to work?

I mean the 86 to work with the 85 wiring?

You can try looking through the factory service manuals for wiring diagrams.

and for questions you might have:
