I'm in the midst of having both my rear wheel bearings changed with brand new ones. I guess a combination of age and traversing deep potholes and jumping the driveway (with the severe winter cold the ashphalt on most Canadian driveways rise creating kind of a cliff to the road scenario, eventually thedriveway settles back to normal in the heat of July and August) over the years has finally taken a toll on them. It was discovered during a routine alignment when a tech let the engine run the rear wheels and used a stethoscope to listen to my bearings. one side is shot (may explain the slight vibration I experience) the other side is good but I figure I'll change them both at the same time. Anyway, I found out from the Infiniti parts advisor at my dealer that the rear wheel bearings branded in the Nissan box cost more than the aftermarket bearings in the SKF box. SKF produces both bearings in Japan for Nissan and simply brands one Nissan and the other a generic SKF. So save yourself some cash and buy the SKF one, I did.

BTW the SKF rear bearings are a nicely machined part pre packed with a ton of grease from the factory.

The J has just over 90000 miles, mostly on potholed rutted roads (there are huge unavoidable pot holes all along the 401 and the province can't fix them because they are cash strapped-ditto for the city). Sure they do a patch job, but the holes re-appear only after a few weeks. The roads in the Greater Toronto Area are crap and getting worse. I blame provincial mismanagement under the previous conservative government as well as municipal downloading. My 2000 VW with only 40000 miles needs wheel bearings all around. The roads, street car tracks and the odd railway crossing all take a toll. The roads where so smooth when I had bought the J in the mid 90's.

People want massive tax cuts and then wonder why their roads start to fall apart after they get them. Everyone seems to want a free lunch.

Is your J being worked on now?

Having the rear wheel bearings changed out, made a HUGE difference. Its regained poise and confidence. I also had the dealer align the steering. Car feels new again. I've basically been driving it all day since I picked it up.

The J30 is an extremely sweet ride. Happy to hear the bearings made a difference. How much did they set you back, if you don't mind me asking?

I got a set of two rear SKF bearings for a total of $180 (in Canadian dollars +taxes). Infiniti Canada wants $280(Canadian Dollars + taxes) for the exact same bearings, except branded with a Nissan logo.

As we all know dealer cost is roughly half of retail and the factory makes a profit on parts [warehousing shipping].........so it's safe to say that if you could buy at the real oem cost [what they sold to Nissan for] you might save 75%.

That's pretty much how most retail business works.

Use to buy top of the line white dress shirts in Central America before they were labeled, at $ 28 a dozen [bought 48 shirts at a time out the factory door]. They sold in NYC for $49.95 each with a fancy label. Many times the Label was the only thing Made In USA.........they had 7 or so labels they used on the same shirts. There was an extra QC step after the label was placed so about 1 out of 10 shirts I purchased had a defect so I still netted 40 shirts for $3 each and gave the other 8 away.

off topic---

I had to throw my retail story out there...

I had the opportunity once to go into a tie factory and pick out silk ties for 5 dollars a pop.... a few friends were along... at the end of the walk-through...they asked us which label we wanted on the ties.... they had most famous label names..

the only ones that had to be branded were Tabasco ties...the Tabasco brand is so obvious...

I remember buying about 20 ...thnking that I could go back a year later.... well the person who invited us was no longer there...

7 years later, I still have most of the ties... can't afford to pay 35-70 dollars a tie.
