Went too long between oil changes, and now I need to replace my nissan pathfinder engine since no local shops are willing to tear it down and fix the sludge/damage.
I'm trying to figure out what the best route to take is. Option 1 is going with a low-mileage used engine, or Option 2 is going with a brand new OEM long block straight from Nissan. The total cost difference looks like it's going to be around $4,000 to $5,000 between the two options once labor is factored in.
For anyone who has dealt with a swap on these vehicles, is the peace of mind and warranty of a new long block worth the extra cash, or should I just save the money and roll the dice on a solid used motor?

Nissan's parts warranty is only a year and most JY's will take a bad motor back, so IMHO there's no big advantage to going new. BTW, there's a known problem with the PCV J-hoses collapsing on the R52 Pathies and gen3 Muranos, which can cause the engine to sludge even if you've changed the oil religiously. Something to keep an eye on, regardless of which replacement you use. It may not actually have been your fault.

What's too long between oil changes , and was it that most /all changes were excessively long , or just a recent or past couple that went too far out ?
