Im helping my friend put in a sr20 in his 89 hatch 240sx.

My problem is I dont know if the turbo that came with the motor is beat.( he got a whole RPS13 blacktop front clip) I checked for shaft play and there is none forward and back but i do feel sum side to side, not sure maybe 1 or 2 mm either way.

When we took all the intake piping going into the turbo there was a pool of oil sitting in the intake elbow that goes into the compressor. My question is could this be just beacuse the front clip was sitting for so long or are the turbo's seals shot. the clips odometer said sumthin around 140k Km. Thanx.

i had the came problem when i got my sr, I noticed that there was a little bit of oil in the compreser elbow. Then when I installed the engine and turned it on and went for a ride around the block and came back I poped my hood open and it smelled like burning oil and that little bit of oil turned into a pool of oil. So I guess what im trying to say is that there could be a chance that the turbo is bad

the best way and only reliable way to tell visually if the turbo is leaking oil is to remove the O2 dump pipe and check behind the turbine wheel with a flashlight or a good lightsource for burnt like charcoal..(oil). if you see any deposits behind the wheel then there is a good chance turbo is shot. However finding oil in the intake side of the turbo is very common due to the breather pipe coming off of the valvecover. Look behind the exaust turbine wheel (that way you will know). If there is no deposits like I described you are cool!!!

I had oil in hotpipe as well. PLUS I had shaft play front to back and more than a mm or 2 from side to side. I was worried but after starting it up it ran great. I ended up boosting a bar daily on that turbo for over a year w/o any problems.

Does the compressor wheel spin freely?

The only way to know for sure is start it up and drive it... or take it off and take it to a turbo shop.
