When should the overdrive feature be turned on to maximize gas mileage?

It should be left on unless you are in a situation where you need better and quicker engine braking.

I use it a lot here in LA, unfortunately there is a freeway here that I live next to, the 110, which is the worst here by Pasadena which has stop signs to get on, and you only have about 10 feet to get up to highway speed, so I need it! Living here is probably another reason I get such bad gas mileage, as I am not able to be as conservative a driver as I would like to be.

I'm glad to hear you're not one of those people who take don't reach highway speed until AFTER they've merged onto the highway...man that drives me crazy.

On ramps are meant to be used to get the car up to freeway speeds! Okay. Rant over.

Agreed. Here we have a law stating an on ramp must be a minimum of a quarter mile in length. Why? ANY car, even a Geo Metro, can get up to at least 60 MPH in a quarter.

But do people actually do this? NO!

There is an onramp where I used to work that is a HALF mile long. And I usually ended up violating the car pool lane just so I could merge at speed, because people thing that cruising down the lane at 35 mph and then waiting till the last hundred feet to speed up is a good idea. No, that's what causes traffic jams and bottlenecks.

hahaha ohh wow you guys should really come spend a week with me driving here in the LA area! OMG!!! hahahaha I think it is such that people friggin cruise on to the freeway, especially here on the 110 where you are at a dead stop to merge onto a freeway where people are doing 55-75. This was the first freeway in the area wayyy back when, it went straight to downtown, since then they expanded it out to Long Beach long ago, but never bothered to fix the on ramps on the North end of the ORIGINAL freeway! o0o well, it is a fun freeway to drive and fun to race on, well in the Mustang at least, cuz the V has no grip with the stock tires. Best freeway in LA it has soooo many curves and things. But so many people have lost their lives on this freeway because of doing stupid things and not paying attention since they don't know the freeway.

I think that we have a law of the same nature, but I think it only applies to newer roads being built. The older freeways, just throw you in there from the street. A woman who works for the local paper wrote a story about a certain ramp that just throws you onto the freeway. She asked her friend about if they thought if it was unsafe and they responded, "Heck this is Houston. You have to be at the speed limit before you hit the ramp." Our motto here is "Houston - Drive it like you stole it."
