I'm using a usb turntable to convert my LP vinyls to CDs. Windows XP Pro on an HP laptop. I have multiple programs that I use including Easy Vinyl Converter, Audacity, Magix Music on CD and DVD and Itunes.

All of a sudden I no longer have the ability to adjust the volume (incoming level) when I'm recording. The usb audio codecs is there but when I go to the volume control in the programs or go through the control panel, there is just nothing there in the way of a mixer or volume control to put back in the programs. If it's any help, the controls are all there for playback through the onboard sound card. Just not the usb audio codecs selection.

I'm guessing that something got inadvertently deleted somewhere, but I'm not sure what to do since the recording still works. I do need the level control as some of the tapes and albums are of varying strengths.

Is there a particular driver I need to reinstall or is there somewhere else in the computer I should be looking?

Did the USB turntable come with any CDs? That probably has drivers on it. You might also check the manufacturer's website to see if they have drivers available for download.

If those don't work, you can check the device manager (Control panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager) to see if the device (the turntable) is listed. If it's there, you can right click on it and click properties to bring up a window with more info, including driver info.

What USB turntable are you using? I looked into doing the same thing years ago when they were still very expensive but couldn't justify the price. Now I've re-purchased most of the stuff on CD...but there's still enough left to make it worth converting it if turntables have gotten cheap enough.

I've reinstalled everything and looked all over the internet. No luck. I may have the problem solved now that I've had a few more cups of coffee and actually paid attention to what I have. The turntable has a signal gain dial tucked around the side that I had completely forgotten about. Works just like the volume control within the programs themselves.

I'm using the Numark PT-01 portable USB turntable and love it. It's not the fanciest by far but incredibly easy to use. We're casual listeners so we're not looking for professional studio sound and this turntable is very good for the price. We paid $99 at Guitar Center.

It has an internal amp so you don't need any other equipment between the record player and the computer and it has an input plug so you can run your tape deck, microphone or anything else through the turntable and convert that stuff to digital, too. It comes with EZ Vinyl Converter, Audacity and ITunes software. It's great.

Don't forget something to clean the records before you put them on the turntable. I found the Stanton VC-1 liquid and brush at Sam Ash Music.
