I need help please. I bought a 240 about a month ago and something is wrong with the transmission. I try to shift to first and it won't go even though the pedal is depressed and seems fine. Second is similar, but goes in. I figure it's a clutch cable or maybe bad clutch. My main question is: Is it worth it to take it to a shop and fix it, or buy a used transmission from a guy for $200. If you think I should get the transmission, how should I check it out to make sure I'm not buying a transmission as bad or worse than the one I have? It's obviously not installed on anything. Thanks alot PEACE. Tek.

Have a look at the clutch. It's not a cable, it's a hydraulic system. Are you able to shift into the other gears aside from 2nd? If the problem seems to be pretty universal, might want to have a look at your clutch slave to see if it's pressing down on the fork. If not, then have a look at the pressure plate and throw out bearing. If your clutch is totally shot, then yeah you know what to do.

hydraulic clutch system, soo check for leaks @ the master/slave cylinders

check pedal freeplay

check transmission fluid level; might wanna try to replace old GL-4 gear oil w/ some synthetic

only does that when it's cold or all the time?

It does it in first, and second doesn't really want to go in, but it does. Reverse grinds a bit when shifting into it. For a while it was giving me a weird knock when engaging and disengaging the gears. Then a couple nights ago it was working fine, I drive home. In the morning it's acting up. So, is it a hydraulic leak somewhere you think? Thanks Tek.

check transmission fluid level; hope u got a set of 4 jask stands so u can level your car up in the air to do this/ just goto local lube place & have them look...

can't hurt to look @ the clutch fluid level in the engine compartment to see if you are empty...

Synchronizers maybe? If they're worn they will usually make the dog teeth grind and may sound like a clunk or short grind before the dog gear engages. How many miles are on the transmission?

ok, so I should take it to a lube place and check all the transmission fluid levels. If they are all ok, then I should worry about the transmission itself? It has 180k miles on it. If I take it to aamco or something to get fixed, how much do you think I'm gonna be in the hole? Is it more worth it to try to do it myself, even if it's a hydraulic prob? Thanks for all the feedback. PEACE. Tek.

I'm just worried that driving it is going to make something worse. I don't want to tow it, and I don't want to spend a ton of money to fix it. So, I'm trying save myself some trouble by figuring out what the problem is then taking it somewhere to get fixed. If it's simple, I can do it. If it's moderately difficult, Ive got a buddy that can hook me up. If it's a big thing, I'm just screwed. More specifics though: It seems like it works better after it's warmed up. It was also working fine at the end of the night on friday (when I finally pushed it too far, I'm guessing), but when I tried to drive it Saturday, it was messed up. Pedal doesn't seem to have any unusual play or movement. I know that there is a leak somewhere. I've been waiting to get the engine steamed or degreased to try to find it. I thought it was my power steering fluid, but perhaps it's the clutch master cylinder. I'll check that. EDIT: Also, It may help to know that the problem seemed to be getting worse the harder I drove the car. As I revved it higher and then wen't back to normal driving, the clutch ran less smooth, and engaged oddly. It wasn't enough to really worry about at the time, but was probably a sign of a problem. Do you think the clutch just needs adjusting or that it was steadily loosing more and more fluid? Thanks again for your help. PEACE. Tek
