In the picture below the part circled in red, what is it?

I think when I took the head off I only had one (it was long ago so I am not sure), but the FSM shows two of them, the second going where the blue circle is. What is the purpose of those inserts? Does it matter which way the gap is pointing? Thanks so much, I am putting the head on the block today and really want to do it soon.

Thanks.

My friend just told those are dowel pins and that I infact need two, because they alignt he head to the block. I guess I must have dropped the second one, but now I do have two because I had other blocks.

those are the dowel pins, you need them to line up the head with the block. sometimes they get stuck in the block sometimes in the head.
