Hello everyone,

My 1999 engine seized due to an oil leak, ended up swapping in a 1997 engine. Everything went relatively smoothly except for an extra digital EGR sensor on the '99 but not on the '97. Now there is a CEL, I want to get rid of this problem and try to pass smog by swapping for a pre-'99 ECU. I'm curious if the harness across the years are the same.

Is there any foreseeable issues (immobilizer) or is it just a simple plug and play swap out. The swapped engine is running decently but I want that CEL gone.

Best Regards,
J

What is the fault code associated with the CEL. If your car has NATS (Nissan Anti Theft System), then swapping an ECU could be a problem since the Ignition Key ID is stored in both the IMMU (Immobilizer Unit) and the ECU. The easiets way to find out if you have NATS or not is to duplicate your car key. If the duplicate can start and run the car, then you don't have NATS.

Hello loystock,

Is the IMMU on the engine itself or is it a separate unit in the engine bay? The new '97 engine ran without an issue after swapping out the '99. I guess what I'm asking is, if the new engine is running do I have an IMMU? In the case I swap the ECU, could I just get the key reprogrammed by a dealer or willing party?

Also, any idea on if ECU is indeed swappable or is the harness different? As far as the CEL code, I'll have the pull the it for you later.

Thank you for your help and response.
