So here is the deal I am dropping my transmission because the idiot who put my motor transmission stripped my fill plug. Got everything off but the last two bolts at the top of the transmission. These bolts are from hell. I cannot get them to come off. I am working on the passengerside bolt I think I heard it crack one time but can see it strip a little. I hope I can get it off in the morning if you have any tricks please let me know. I have the long extensions and the swival with the breaker bar. I am able to look at the bolt from the passengerside. If anyone has done this can you drop some tidbits on how you got them off.

spray some nut cracker or other similiar spray on them, other than that it sounds like you have it. Make sure the socket you are using is a 6 sided one not the star type as they will strip the bolts easier. Otherwise the easiest way I found was about three ft worth of extension running it from the back of the transmission forward along the top to the bolt with the ujoint head on it. lowering the transmission from the mount a little may help as well.

Do you think by having the rest of the bolts removed on the transmission may be causing pressure on the top bolts? I have it on a jack but they are really hard to get going.

It's possible, I like to keep the two bigger side ones in until the rest are out. If the transmission has been dropped before you may have gotten unlucky as well with someone over torquing them.

Would this not shift the motor? So once you tilt the motor forward then you will get to the bolts in the back. I am thinking take the hood off and you could get the breaker bar in there and whala. Would you suggest putting the bottom bolts back in the transmission so you can have leverage and take the top bolts all the way and not run the risk of damaging the throw out bearing and or bell housing.

Make sure to remove the top rad hose and TB intake hoses so the engine can tilt. Once you have done that and removed the drive shafts and exhaust, you can let the trans down after removing the X-member bolts. Now it should be pretty easy with 2' or 3' extension to get the top bolts out from below. I've had mine out several times and this is the way.The one on the upper PS also captures the starter/battery ground wire.

If you are going to do it make sure to not aste time with the long extension and swival technique on the upper transmission bolts. Remove the bolts that hold the motor mounts then remove the transmission support bar or xmemeber (make sure to leave the bottom bolts in the transmission for support). Take off the plenum downpipes as the hard plastic does not bend well. Once this is done take your hydrolic jacks and lift the back of the transmission up and this tilt the motor forward. You have enough room (considering that you are a skinny dude with small to medium hands to be able to get a shallow socket on the bolts with a ratchet (you will want to use the cheat bar with this) and remove the bolts.

yessirr! I have the car back together. I have some minor stuff to finish up like zip ties on wires etc and I will fire here up and see whats all the hype over Redline MTL. Kinda worried b/c the MTL is very thin. Royal Purple is too.

My car has been cutting and cut off on me. Do you think may my exhaust may have a leak neer the headers will cause this? Loss of back pressure. I will go under there and check.

I know this thread is old, but i recently pulled the transmission on my 300zx, and to get the upper bolt i used a little trick that my dad taught me. All you need is two wrenches and nothing else, and there is no need to tilt the motor or use a hack saw to get the bolt out :chuckle:. Simply connect the wrenches like i did in the picture below and you should have no trouble reaching the bolt through the engine bay! Hope this trick can save someone from beating themselves up trying to get these bolts out.

Nice revival! You want to make a quicker work on getting it out, get a ratcheting wrench and attach another wrench on the opposite end for torque. That way you do not have to take it off, then fish it back on to get more turns in.
