It has x2 10mm bolts close to the valve covers and also has x1 10mm bolt closest to the where the passenger side mount goes (take your time and look for it).

You can replace the valves and it sounds like a perfect excuse to slap some new guides and forged pistons in it!

Can you use valves made for the CA18DE? Are the exhaust valves sodium filled? I didnt want to have to do any major work on this thing, I just wanted to put a timing belt in, some rod bearings, and go....

CA18DE-CA18DET samesame, I think only SR valves are sodium filled. You don't want that sodium man, gives you high blood pressure.

They sold you bottom of the barrel garbage. That's unexcusable and if I were you I would definitely let them know how upset I am. Something funky about the name "Rims and things">>>>>>>>>>>>> . Anyways, give them a chance to make good on this mishap and let's see how it goes.

Looking at that chocolate milk-colored oil, i would have to say you have yourself a BHG.

(blown head gasket, that is.)

How about that broken timing belt and the exhaust manifold washer between the cam lobe and the head?

Bro, let me say something to you, unless you have some agreement pre-arranged with the folks that sold you that engine, I wouldn't go tearing stuff apart and then still expect a refund of some sort.

Get your money back, that motor is going to be a source of many headaches just to get it operating. Get a refund, stop taking it apart.

Just rebuild it. If anything ask for a partial refund or something. Anyone buying CA motorsets these days must do so with the idea it will need rebuilt (especially from a company like R&T).

I was planning on doing a mild rebuild, but not replacing valves...I always tend to over-do a rebuild and get the best stuff for the motor. I know I should just buy some valves and go, but I'll probably end up getting a set of SS valves and upgraded guides...and probably the toga valve stem seals. But what kinda springs can I throw in there that are reasonably priced?

We have given you advice, but you chose to go it on your own and again that is your option. This thread is going totally off topic, so if there's nothing else needed to know about the timing cover removal, consider this thread locked!
