upper timing chain tensioner

Sorry if this has been asked before. Right now I'm in the middle of fixing my chain rattle. The tensioner was really hard to move in and out but eventually did free up.

It goes in all the way and comes back out about 3/4 of the way and I have to pull it the other 1/4. Is this normal or is it time for a new tensioner?

the tensioner is pretty cheap, so i would go ahead and get a new one. did you or are you going to remove the top guide? i removed mine, rattle gone! good luck
