i have the 2005 models of the type r and i have found that they are really meant for sealed boxes. I had two enclosures i made for my type r's, both sealed and the one with a larger volume was way more sloppy than the smaller one i built. I custom built both myself to alpine specs and rec's, i just found that the smaller the box the higher the freq range the sub would hit which kinda sucked but it is what it is.
If you want lower, try getting a 15. Check out soundplinter, they are supposed to have good stuff as well as focal. It all depends on howmuch you really want to drop. Ported boxes or vented can have good tight sound like you find in home theater but in cars, well, every car has different acoustics. If i had to buy a new sub for my car, i think i would honestly try soundsplinter next. You can always look at RE, Dynaudio, Rainbow, MB Quart, you know, some of the less mainstream stuff. I bought type r's cause i didnt reallyknow what was out there 5-6 years ago. Am i dissatisifed? No way, i like my subs, i would just like to try others in the future. If you want sql, a sealed box may be more beneficial for you, just check out the frequency extension in boxes of a certain volume and at what spl they begin to roll off in comparison to ported/vented enclosures.
Hope it all helps.
