I'm currently running a single Alpine 12" Type-R powered by an Alpine MRP-M650, all running at 600watts at 2-ohms in a 1.75^2ft ported box tuned to 35hz. Don't get me wrong, this setup is great, but I'm looking for something more, basically the next step up in terms of sq AND spl, while sticking to a single sub setup.

I'm definitely going to upgrade the box to something larger and tuned lower, but as for the sub, any suggestions? Nothing too crazy, but maybe something along the lines of a Diamond Hex Pro, Alpine Type-X, or maybe even a Rockford Fosgate T1. The sub will most likely be fed with an amp in the 750-1000 watt range, so keep that in mind. So, what do you guys suggest?

i have the 2005 models of the type r and i have found that they are really meant for sealed boxes. I had two enclosures i made for my type r's, both sealed and the one with a larger volume was way more sloppy than the smaller one i built. I custom built both myself to alpine specs and rec's, i just found that the smaller the box the higher the freq range the sub would hit which kinda sucked but it is what it is.

If you want lower, try getting a 15. Check out soundplinter, they are supposed to have good stuff as well as focal. It all depends on howmuch you really want to drop. Ported boxes or vented can have good tight sound like you find in home theater but in cars, well, every car has different acoustics. If i had to buy a new sub for my car, i think i would honestly try soundsplinter next. You can always look at RE, Dynaudio, Rainbow, MB Quart, you know, some of the less mainstream stuff. I bought type r's cause i didnt reallyknow what was out there 5-6 years ago. Am i dissatisifed? No way, i like my subs, i would just like to try others in the future. If you want sql, a sealed box may be more beneficial for you, just check out the frequency extension in boxes of a certain volume and at what spl they begin to roll off in comparison to ported/vented enclosures.

Hope it all helps.
