the manifold if I remember correctly is a stout cast piece, so probably no worries with it supporting higher HP...I'd say stick with the internal gate until you have problems, since welding on a cast manifold sucks. If you ever decide to upgrade, I would say you would probably want to braze a wategate as close as possible to the turbo flange. Brazing works better on cast stuff than welding, supposedly. Anyway thats all premature, since I'd imagine that porting the stock gate should be good for quite a bit of power (if any porting is needed, not sure). If you are seriously considering "upgrading" the kit to external wategate and ETC, then maybe you should consider another kit...the manifold is considered an integral (if not THE integral) part of any NA turbo kit, and it doesn't make sense to sink the kind of money you are talking about into a kit when you need something beyond its capacities. The way you are talking (building your engine, making 450 hp) I can tell you off the bat that you are going to have to chuck the fuel system for any off the shelf turbo kit... and now you are talking about upgrading the manifold to external wastegate, so you would be replacing or modifying the manifold... and then you have the fact that most intercoolers that come with (or don't come with) turbo kits aren't designed to support 450 hp... For that level of power you are going to need a big intercooler core, which will probably require you to cut away some of your sheetmetal, you will require large charge pipes, preferably with flanged ends to hold those hoses on under boost, and you will have to upgrade to a Z32 mafs and I'd think a minimum of 720 cc's or so... (top feed conversion would start to make sense). At that power level, you will need an ignition upgrade and some sort of timing retard....Your cooling system will require upgraded, and you will probably want at least a 3" mandrel bent downpipe... which I'm not sure too many kits come with. So, think about all that. It may make more sense to piece together a turbo kit with all the right parts to make it work to acheive your goals, than to buy one and have to fiddle with things and replace things just to get it to do what you want.
Edit:damn I typed a lot. also, merry christmas, everyone!
