A couple of questions for the experts....

My 2010 G37 Journey with the Navigation package has a lot of errors and omissions in the map database. I have checked the Infiniti map update page, and it keeps saying I have the current map. That seems odd - when I owned a Lexus with navigation they offered updates every year - in fact, they updated it once for free because of customer complaints. Anyone know when these updates are available?

Second, when I rip a CD to the Music Box, it tries to use (a local) copy of the Gracenote database to get CD and track titles. This database is way out of date - it fails to find the name information for almost every CD I rip. I know I can use the procedure to copy CD information to a USB drive and upload that to get the information, but that is an awkward process - especially if you have to do it for every single CD. Can this Gracenote database be updated - perhaps as part of the navigation update? Has anyone had that done successfully?

Have you run across this for Gracenote updates?

I'm not sure about the NAV updates as I'm still running the code from 2007 on my sedan. I do need to look into an update soon tho.

Yep, that is the process of extracting the track information to a usb drive, putting it on a PC to upload and get the new information, and then putting it back into Music Box on the G37. It works, but it's a hassle and it is slow. And, you have to have a PC - it doesn't work on Macs - which is my preferred platform. Seems like they would have a better procedure to update this.

Ooops...Thought that linked to a software update location instead of the "how to fix". Shows I need to wait for my coffee to kick in before responding.

Are the CD's being ripped ones you created yourself via downloads or "store bought"?

All commercial CDs, for example the new Leonard Cohen album "Old Ideas" just released. It says it is checking with Grace Note, but fails, so the album is "named" by date and time. I thought most of these CDs had the title and track title information embedded in the CD itself - when I rip the CDs to iTunes, it picks up the name and tracks immediately. Maybe it is getting from the Web, but it is really fast.

I'm not sure. I don't have musicbox in my car so I have not played with it much. It is in the wife's car but I have done nothing but had it ingest a few CD's. For the most part CDDB is relatively useless to us since the CD's she has used to add tracks were ones she made herself and none of them have any track information anyway. It's kinda not worth my effort to fix :)

I may play around with it this weekend.....

It's not all new CDs...I just loaded the new Chevelle and new Bush albums and one worked. For the Bush album, I just edited the tracks with the names. MUCH easier than having gracenote do it!

When you in the music box, just press the menu button and go into edit albums (i think...if it's not that, you should see an option). Just erase the date for the name and put in the track names.

Yeah, that works as well. I thought about doing that in the G but the wife has added 50+ CD's that are mix CD's and none have title nor track info. Screw that :)

Ya...you have to keep up with it. With the NAV bypass, I can do it anytime :)

Yesterday I plugged in a USB drive and tried to update six albums that were without names and track names. Apparently, what it copies to the USB drive is the _entire_ album. I sat and waited about five minutes while it said "transfering...", then drove home from work (about a ten minute drive); got home, and it still says "transferring....." Gave up and turned of the ignition. This is really crazy and not particularly user friendly - my understanding is that Gracenote (and similar systems) use track counts and timing to recognize CDs - not the entire song. I guess I will have to do this a couple of CDs at a time since it is so slow. When I checked the USB drive this morning, it had an empty .dat file - so it doesn't even keep the partial load.

Finally got through the process. I just let it run for a hour with Accessory on to back up the unnamed tracks. Never saw a message that the transfer was finished so I just turned it off and disconnected the USB drive. However, it did succeed and I was able to pull the CD and track names down using the program that Infiniti provides. I was able to update Music Box this morning - but it took about 5 minutes to transfer the information. I think the connection is USB 1.1 (e.g., very slow). One confusing thing is that the activity light of the USB drive flashes continually - apparently even when the transfer is finished. Very confusing.

I have tons of mix CDs in my Music Box and the title and track info show up for all of them. I burn a lot of my own custom "Best of" CDs using either Windows Media Player or Real Player. As long as I tell the program to write text to the CDs when I burn them, the text always transfers successfully to the Music Box.

as for the nav update. the nav website is not quite right. put in your car as a 2011 and you will see that is the update you need.

I checked the Infiniti Navigation site, inputted my car info (2011 G37 Convertible) and it showed an update for $199 (includes 5 CDs). Has anyone bought this? Is it worth it? Thanks.

I ordered the package for my 2010 G37 Journey. The instructions says it takes 90 minutes to do the update, and the engine has to be running the whole time. I will do the update tomorrow and see how it goes. It looks like it updates Gracenote too. I'll report back on the results.

I ran the update - and it did take more than 90 minutes to complete. Everything went fine and the system is working. I'll see over the next week whether some of the map problems have been fixed. Strangely, after I had started the update, I noticed that the receipt said "2009-2010 Brazilian Navigation Software". All the DVDs and the box say North America, and label it as Map X9 - DVD Year 2012.

A couple of tips: Blue Tooth has to be turned off to install the software, but the instructions didn't match what my system showed. Also, you have to check to make sure that the software has a higher version number than what is installed. The instructions say to check the five-digit version number to make sure it is the same or "higher" than the existing version. However, the new five-digit version number starts with an alpha character ("A"). Since my car is a 2010 probably built in mid-2010 I figured the new software should be installed, and I didn't have any problems.

It's expensive, and a lot to go through to get this updated.

While I have not checked into an update for the '07 sedan yet (my coupe does not have nav) I thought infiniti service center could do it quickly? Anyone check into their pricing?

Just curious

For the 2010 and up you can do it at home. As a heads up it will show A####. This is newer than 6####. Alpha can be used in terms of 10.

For 09 and below it has to be done at the dealership. First buy it on the navigation.com web site. You will get a code that is given to the dealership. Confirm the have the latest maps. They should only charge 1 hr labor max.
The rates are 2010 and higher is 199 on sale
The rates for 2009 and lower is 99 on sale but 1hr dealer charge. After update at dealer confirm you have the right year map. I didn't on my M and has to get redone after the dealership got the updated disc

I updated my 2010 to the 2012 and the voice has changed on directions. Boot up is faster. And nav is faster on response on touchscreen and recalculations

it should be faster, & the ignition has to be on - not engine running :nono: .I update maps every other year...

^^ do this. Put a charger on the battery. why waste 90 mins in gas. I did it without even battery charging. No problems with battery drainage.
