I just got back from my dealer this morning. Had my 7500 mile maintance done and warrenty stuff like:

1) Fuel gauge not reading full when you fill up and also during fill-up stoppping well short of being filled. Nissan Tech. was called and they had the fix in the works. Nissan is aware of the problem.

2) The problem with the scratching on the door sills. The dealer(d!ck Scott Nissan, Canton Michigan) took photos and called Nissan Tech. They are also aware of the growing problem and the fix is in the works which will include repainting. I hope they get to that real soon because I am down to bare metal. Worried about rust at the 6 month mark.

3) Rusted metal screws on license plate. New ones put on..

Hope this proves helpfull to anyone interested...

Can you post a pic of where you aer talking about being down to bare metal?

I can't see any scratching on mine near the doors anywhere, but I want to be conscious of it in the future.

Thanks,Joe Hughes

I showed my Rogue to my friend that is a service rep at the Infiniti dealer. He pointed out to me all of the vulnerable areas that will develop rust where factory undercoating is not applied.

Owners should go to an autobody supply dealer to purchase good quality undercoating and hit all the missed areas, notably, under the wheel wells, down on the engine subassembly, missed chasis spots.

Rust will develop in no-time. He knows. He sees it every day.

I don't understand what is happening here - why exactly will the Rogue develop body rust so much more quickly than other vehicles? Or by "quickly", are you just referring to the rust that will occur in all vehicles without undercoating after 10 to 15 years? I think the majority of vehicles on the road don't get undercoating, and typically take a decade or more to develop rust, except in high salt areas such as the coast. So what is different about the Rogue that causes it to rust? Any more details you can give to create a clearer picture here would be much appreciated. I can't imagine why a new vehicle would rust quickly, regardless if you choose to undercoat or not.

...relax....imo, the guy at the Infinity place may be accurate in where themost probable places for rust to appear are, but, I also think he is a little over zealous in his prediction.....unless, you are in a high salt coastalarea where he is....New York is terrible for rusting cars where it is anabsolute requirement to keep your car clean and have complete under-coat coverage. Anyway, Nissan does warrant our Rogues against rust...I wouldn't bethat concerned....the scratching and possible rust that we have beentalking about on our door frames has nothing to do with undercoating, salt, or anything...its caused by an oversight by Nissan.

Infiniti man said that spot oxidation will occur in a year in untreated areas. Serious rust will affect body panels in 6 years. He suggested, while the car is new and clean, to address uncoated areas. I live in a salt road part of the country, i.e., up-State NY.

I'm probably more fortunate than alot of people....I live in VERY lowhumidity, sulphide instead of salt for snow/ice removal, climate herein Colorado..... Apply just normal upkeep, and body rust becomes a very minimal concern....almost as rust free as the "California car" reputation...

Rustproofing in the forms of undercoatings, oil sprays, etc is probably the most misunderstood automotive accessory. It's not a product but a service. How well it's applied and it's upkeep with re-applications has a large impact on it's effectiveness.

I have used all sorts of oil sprays, IMHO they are not very effective as they wash away or evaporate easily. Heavier sprays and/or undercoatings with some sort of gelling/bonding agent seem to work better. Even then, you just can't get to every nook and cranny in the car. My Altima was professionaly rustproofed with the aforementioned product and I still had some rusting appearing on the underbody and in the engine bay. The rest of the body was OK BTW.

Corrosion has lessened over the years with mfg's dipping the entire body shell into chemical baths to clean and coat the sheet metal with a rust inhibiting layer. Seams get caulked and more attention is paid to areas where water can collect.

My advice?

1) Do some research, find a reputable rustproofer and get the product applied. Get it checked and reapplied if need be every fall before the snow starts (if you do get any).2) Wash the car at least weekly during the winter to get the salt off. Even a simple rinse is better than nothing. Bay style car washes with pressure washers work best for this. Hint: Use special weatherstripping lubricant to keep the doors from freezing shut afterwards.3) Inspect your vehicle for stone chips and get them repaired.

Cheers!

My rogue is only 6 months old and already has rust spots on both sides of the vehicle. I took a clay bar with little elbow grease and they came off, but this if frickin ridicilious. If they come back then i'll take it back to the dealer so they can screw me over somehow. The rogue is warrantied for rust, but if you read it, it says inside-out rust through warranty. So unless you spill a bag of salt inside your car and leave it for a few years, this warranty is worthless! Leave it to nissan. I guess they had to cut costs somewhere.

Just about every automaker has the same rust warranty. It's not just Nissan.

If you are getting small specs of 'rust' appearing on the paint that rub off with waxing, etc then it's not the body rusting. It's either small iron particles from the brakes being thrown up by the wheels onto the body or industrial fallout/pullution. It's especially noticeable on lighter paint colors. Once again, many cars suffer from this. The only fix is a good wash, cleaning with a clay bar system (Mothers, Meguairs, etc have good products) and waxing.

I just find it odd that i've never had another car do this. The car was washed frequently in the winter to avoid any salt build up. Hopefully it doesn't come back. thanks

What color was your other car?

My Aunt had a white Mercedes ML320. It was littered with rust marks after the first winter. So much for German engineering.

Like I said earlier, darker colors won't show these 'rust marks'. Both my silver Altima and my fiancee's silver Protege show the rust marks. I never saw them on my dark blue Pathfinder, black 240SX, or my company car... a dark green Escort wagon.
