I made a thread a few months ago about a non-intercooled setup, and since had to wipe my hard drive and lost all the prices and places I was planning on getting all that stuff, so I came up with a new list based on the old one in my thread. This time, however, it seems to be even cheaper. Possibly $2,000 all said and done. Again, remember, this is a non-intercooled setup running no more than like 6 PSI:

-T3/T04E Turbo (.50 Compressor, .64 Turbine, .57 Trim)-IAP Oil Feed/Return Lines-Tial 38mm Wastegate-JGS Stage 2 Turbo Manifold-IAP Downpipe-370cc Injectors-255 lp/h Fuel Pump-Generic Filter-Custom Piping to Compressor-Custom Piping to Throttle body-MAF Adapter-Apex'i S-AFC 2-Blitz SBC Spec-S Boost Controller-Autometer CF Boost gauge

By my calculations, all of it is going to cost me $1,698 not including the custom piping...not too bad if I do say so myself. Any thoughts?

seems to be a good set-up. What about timing retard and tuning? You should really get a nice wideband 02 sensor. There like $300 bucks these days. That way you can really use the safcII to it potential. Also you could find a nice dsm sidemount for cheap. Why not just put one on. You still need custom piping either way. That setup looks good besides that.

Why buy all that gear listed and not fork over a couple of hundred for a starion FMIC or something like that?

Thanks for the comments, guys. And I will probably invest in a wideband eventually, but this was all about the bare minimum trying to get it running but without skipping any corners and putting up any risks. So if I can get it running and reliable without it, I will...then later I'll invest in one to make full potential out of the same setup.

I also often forget how cheap used sidemounts are. However, aren't Starion and DSM sidemount's kinda small? Oh well, I suppose any intercooler is better than no intercooler...but if there isn't gonna be much more piping than my current list (which there really shouldn't be, save for one more pipe running to the intercooler from the compressor), then I s'pose I oughtta include that. eBay here I come!

EDIT: How about something like this? I think this would be a great little addition since it's relatively cheap and it's a front-mount. Now granted it's obviously not huge, but then again neither are DSM or Starion IC's either, and this one his front-mount atleast. What do you think?

I like it, to bad it doesn't list the end tank in/out sizes though. $218 is cheap....

Yeah, I still think it's a good idea. Wouldn't block the radiator much, either. Now can anyone tell me what they think custom piping is going to cost? I've never had it made before, but I'd like a general idea of how much piping to the compressor, piping from the compressor to the intercooler, and piping from the intercooler to the throttlebody is gonna cost me altogether. I'm gonna make a wild guess and say $200?

I understand it's going to differ...but on average what might it be? Is it possible to go somewhere and have it done for $200 or so? Also, I was looking at the thread on compressor maps and was worried about my choice of a .57 trim turbo...do you think that's going to be an issue? Should I go with a .50 or .54 instead?

at 6psi why is there a need for a boost controller like that?

for timing base retarding will be enough.

looking to be very cheap an fmu would do just fine in this case.

starion IC's are frount mount and pretty big

for a cheap setup with room to upgrade i would look at the t25. with the SSA manifold you can use all the sr parts. I came to about $2000 with greddy IC, greddy downpipe, manifold, turbo, injectors, fuel pump, oil lines, etc. then you can always upgrade to a gti-r t28 (could reach 300+rwhp) or even an disco potato.

wideband isnt compltely needed when you could go on a dyno or if you lucky have a friend with one.

I suppose at 6 PSI there isn't a need for one, but since an intercooler is now in my plans, 6 PSI won't be what I stay at for very long, in which case I would then need one. I also can't stand FMU's, so I would not want to use one. And I had no idea what a Starion IC was til I finally looked at it, but I think I like the one I picked out better than a Starion anyways. As far as the turbo choice, it's going to cost about the same as my path or the one you suggested, so why bother changing all my parts now?

This is only my 0.02 here, but I say sell the fancy schmancy boost controller and get an intercoler/piping with the money. EBC's are overrated on low-power street setups. You can control boost just fine with a $15 valve and its not gonna give you problems like an EBC potentially can.

When its time for huge power, get a standalone that can control boost. My local muffler shop will mount a FMIC and do the piping for ~ $100-$125

Yeah you say you dont want to cut corners, but you're trying to cut out an intercooler. Dont do that. Have your downpipe custom made (who knows if IAP's fits with the JGS mani anyways), skip the EBC like Jessie said, and think about saving money on the turbo (are you planning on getting that one new? thats big money right there that could easially be saved).

Also realise you're going to need a ton of other stuff that you wont realise you need till that last minute. Flanges are always freakin expensive, labor to weld in oil bungs and IC piping isnt exactly cheap (unless you can do it yourself), how do you plan on mounting the gauge, dont forget a flex section for your downpipe, and most likely a new cat, do you have an aftermarket exhaust?, will your battery still fit up front with the IC piping (relocation kit)?, what about a BOV?, etc etc etcccccc

I always tell people who try to list entire setups this, but understand before you start that it is 99% likely that this will cost more than you think, and there will always be suprises. Dont go into this with your daily driver car and a box of parts thinking thats going to be enough, because it probably wont. Not to say that it hasnt worked out for other people (with good results, even), but just leave yourself some slack to pick up things that you'll be forgetting/needing/breaking etc etc etc.

Good luck man!

Thanks for the comments, guys. You can never get too much constructive criticism. Now, as far as getting a MBC instead, where do you propose I get one from? Honestly I've never paid a whole lot of attention to them so I have no idea where I'd get one from compatible with my proposed setup.

Fiznat, as far as an intercooler, it is now figured into the kit. If you look up a few posts, you'll see one I linked to on eBay, which is potentially the one I might get since it's a decent size and won't block the radiator too badly. As far as the downpipe, you're right...I think I will just ditch the idea of getting IAP's due to potential problems and the fact that custom is cheaper anyways. I will most likely not be getting a new turbo unless it's really, really cheap. But I see lightly used T3/T4's on eBay all the time that fit what I want. The boost gauge is going to be mounted in an a-pillar pod, which is already part of my kit just not listed (I apologize for that).

I also have a large list of to-do before getting the setup installed, including things you mentioned like battery relocation, exhaust, etc. Again, they just aren't listed here. And I did forget a BOV, but since I'm going to be able to cut a good bit of cost thanks to the suggestions you guys made, I can easily fit that in now, too. And speaking of BOV's, is there any particular one you guys could suggest for my setup? I know different types of BOV's better suit certain engines or setups, so any reccomendations?

Again, thanks for the constructive criticism guys

If you're looking for a cheap BOV option, people have used 1G DSM BOVs with good results. You can even modify them later if you want to get more boost out of em. Either way cant beat it for ~50 bucks.

I'm glad you got the IC into there, you're right I didnt notice it before. Keep looking around though for better deals. $250 is cheap but it's not all that big... you can get a starion IC for cheaper that will be bigger (but not as pretty, I admit).

When do you plan on starting the project?

1G DSM BOV it is....now how about suggestions on a MBC? I plan to start the project maybe this spring. By then I hope to atleast be buying pieces of the kit and stashing them away until it's time to install. As far as install...maybe this summer or fall. Not sure, all depends on how the money's coming in (poor high school student ...and as a matter of fact I'm still looking for a nice Kouki to hopefully have by Dec. or Jan.) and what might need done to the car/engine prior to installing the setup.

hoping to put this all on over winter break, cuz this is my daily driver whenever im not at school. hasnt been too bad on the budget yet, but ive had the time to wait for good deals. im sure itll be another good chunk of cash once i run into a few install problems.

Sweet...that looks pretty easy

Yeah, mine has to serve as a daily driver most of the time, too. But I can borrow other cars while all the major work is being done if need be...
